What mics work with iMacs? (G5 in particular) Or, how does one (pre)amplify a mic that does not work?

I have a headset whose mic is ineffective on my iMac G5, but works fine with my Dell.

Any tips? Tricks?

I don't WANT to have to buy the iMic [www.griffintechnology.com] but as a last resort I might.

All regular 1/8" microphones "work" but their signal is so low that you can hardly hear them. I've even used a powered microphone and it was still too low. Some type of line level external amplifier will work for you. I've used my dv camcorder (firewire) as well as my portable mini disk player (line in) for that purpose many times. You could even use a tape deck.

Go for the iMic, used on ebay pretty cheap if you get the first generation.

Or USB mic. Either one works well, though USB mics are low-end.
