whats the latest on the DVD format wars?

I'd really like to start enjoying some hi def dvd action, but i don't really want to make an investment in one or the other right now. Does there look to be a leader? Or is this something that looks to last a while? I've thought of a combo player as they've come down in price. Especially with the holidays coming up.

Still up in the air if you ask me. HD-DVD is making a run at the low price market this year, players are dropping into the $200 range.

If I were interested, I'd still wait another year, but I'm honestly not that interested. I've gotten to used to having all my video on a server to go back to putting individual discs in a player.

I know what you mean. I've got all my regular DVDs on my G5 served up to my eyehome. BUT since I've got the HDTV and I've seen how the HD channels look, I'd love to enjoy my movies in HD.

It really doesn't matter who the leader is at this point because the HD-DVD and Blu-Ray standards themselves keep evolving. That Blu-Ray 1.0 player bought a couple months ago is already obsolete w/ 1.1 now getting ready to ship. So no matter what player you buy you'll probably need to replace it in a year or two anyway to take advantage of all the features.

This other thing is that, just like DVDs in their early days, there are a lot of shoddily mastered HD-DVD and Blu-Ray titles around that don't have PQ much better than DVDs.

As for HD-DVD vs. Blu-Ray. Universal really extended the battle when they switched sides. Plus the MPAA is making it hard to play either on a computer. We are stuck with both formats for at least another year, if not longer. You could always buy a combo player like this LG: [www.engadget.com] but it costs as much as a standalone HD-DVD + Blu-Ray player.

I think this fight is crazy. If they let it go much longer HD on-demand streaming will beat them both.

EDIT: just noticed WalMart will have the Toshiba A2 HD-DVD player on sale tomorrow only (and while supplies last) for $98. That is a pretty hot deal w/ minimal investment if you want to stick your toe in the HD media race.

Does your HDTV support 720P?
If it does (and MAKE SURE), set your EyeHome to output to 720p, not 1080i.
Makes a world of difference!!
Do Not do this if your HDTV doesn't support 720p, it is a BEAR to reset the EyeHome if you mess this up!!

"Good heavens, Miss Sakamoto! You're beautiful!"
"If we dig precious things from the land, we will invite disaster."
"Near the day of Purification, there will be cobwebs spun back and forth in the sky."
"A container of ashes might one day be thrown from the sky, which could burn the land and boil the oceans."

I'll stick with my Oppo which upconverts for now. Let the rest of the suckers out there decide who wins. I wish they would just standardize on something and get it over with. I'm beginning to hate how quickly technology develops these days. Everything is obsolete as you buy it.

If you manage to get the $98 Toshiba, that's a great buy - it is almost as good as Oppo at upconverting (although not quite) and you can try renting some HD-DVDs from Netflix to see how you like it. I am in the Blu-Ray camp and also have an Oppo, but will try to get one of those players anyway.

Better make sure you know which studio does what before you commit. No Pixar or Disney on HD-DVD.

Most of the content sucks no matter how high the definition.

I am not Ryan Seacrest, and I do not approve this message.
