$765 for 4GB in a MacBook
Posted by: Elfboy
Date: November 02, 2007 03:38PM
I'm planning on purchasing a MacBook within a week and would love to have 4 GB of RAM but it's $765 at the Apple Store and that's with the edu discount!

Should I use Expercom deal? Their "upgrade" is only $150!

I suppose this is the same case, meaning something like brain surgery to upgrade RAM, yes?

Really? I thought it was quite involved with lots of tiny screws etc.

Do you think Apple will come to their senses and maybe charge $250-$300??

EDIT: I should clarify that Expercom is a MacBook with the RAM included (I assume installed since it does not say "installation extra")

dude, buy it from the forum host -- OWC -- $169

i think a 10 year old could replace the ram and drive in a macbook

you should be buying your macbook from amazon or macconeection anyway -- $50 rebates, no tax, free ship -- better deal than edu

Yes I've used OWC in the past and will use them in the future. But I was hoping to buy the book with the RAM installed. If it's that easy then I will reconsider. My wife's iBook was anything but simple.

Took me about 5 minutes, most of which was spent hunting for the screwdriver.

This is great news! The guy in the Apple Store made me think it was complicated (like the iBooks were).

What iBook does she have? Everything since the clamshell has been very easy.If you had problems with a G4, then you really should steer clear of installs.

Only if you think three is "lots of". Here are the instructions:

I disliked the G3 iBooks RAM install... I didn't like taking the keyboard off (that ribbon cable is just TOO thin!)..

However, my MacBook was EASY!
Take the battery out, loosen 2 screws (captive screws, so you can't even lose 'em), flip lever to remove old RAM... push new RAM in... Replace cover, tighten screws... replace battery. Done.

OWC even sent an instruction sheet with pictures with the last MacBook RAM I got from them.

I'll have to somewhat agree with Paul. Sometimes it's too easy to strip the screws in the RAM shield.

While you're in there, changing out the hard drive is almost as easy, if you're so inclined.

Another vote for Do-it-yourself and OWC, I did the ram and HD on my husbands MacBook, very simple.

Excellent! Now that I think of it, it WAS the hard drive that was such a PITA in the iBook G4.
120GB might hold me for now, but it's nice to know for the future.

Buy a good screwdriver for the ram install

With the money you save on the ram. Makes the job so much easier and you won't strip the screws. Save it for when you upgrade the hard drive. That's also easy.
