Leopard = slow as @#$%&
Posted by: SDGuy

Just finished installing Leopard on a 2.16 GHz C2D iMac
Reminds me of why I dumped the Beige G3 running 10.2.8 - delayed response when typing in any application, waiting for new windows to make their appearance, endless spinning beachballs...etc....etc...etc...

This is an improvement?? WTF?? I assume this is because of Spotlight indexing the harddrive, but Apple couldn't make it an option to run only during idle times?? This thing is nearly unuseable right now. I think I'll go get some lunc and come back in an hour or so to see things improve.

I did a clean install on the same machine, and it is extremely fast. Windows open without hesitation, and I've yet to see a beachball. Every application seems faster and more responsive. As an added bonus, my computer will now unmount unavailable drives without freezing up. One annoying thing is that it takes a little longer to wake from sleep. But other than that, it has been a great upgrade. I'm not sure what is wrong with yours, but it has not been my experience with the same machine.

depending on how much stuff you have on the computer, you may also want to consider dessert and and a massage... and maybe watch a football game, or two B)

Sometimes it is what it is...
and then there's times when it's really better.

Open Activity Monitor and see how many processes are still running. LIke any new system install, it's performing a LOT of tasks in the background. Give it time....

Good Luck!

Installed Leopard via "upgrade" on my MPB 2.16 core duo. Very few troubles. FASTER system/responses and MUCH FASTER wake from sleep. The GUI isn't my favorite, but the core system is faster, better, so who am I to complain?

I did what I shouldn't have, but really didn't want to reinstall and reconfigure stuff. I upgraded to Leopard on my C2D 2.33 MBP. But that wasn't the bad part... the OS that was on there was setup via Migration Assistant from a 12" PB G4.

Other than the problems that are "features" in Leopard, it's working well.

@#$%& should be neither fast nor slow.
If you're having problems with either, try Phillips MoM or Metamucil, respectively.

Leopard is the fastest Mac OS X version yet, even on G4 machines.

It's a PEBKAC issue, SDGuy.

Funny, on my G4's, it takes 10 seconds longer to start up than Tiger did, Photoshop transforms on large documents take about 10% longer and opening documents takes a second or more longer. It also pounds my hard drive harder, even when there aren't any page-outs (WTF is it DOING?!).

The Finder's GUI seems perky in Leopard, but that's not the whole story.

Barefeats ran a speed comparison. It was a mixed bag. For me, I mostly care about finder operations and Python programs, both of which appear to be faster.

The removal of the Dock's hierarchical view and custom icons are baffling to me (http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=2007103111561983) but I do see some nice speed increases on both my tower and MacBook. I'd give it time, SDGuy. Could be Spotlight doing its anal-retentive thing.

Leopard is the fastest OS on a Mac I've used. I bet it's the Spotlight indexing. It does take a while and make the machine all hot and loud (fan), but once it's done it'll be good.

Must be a personal problem.

Seriously, I put Leopard on wiped USB and FW HDs, and ran them on my C2D mini, PB12, and MDD respectively, and they are very fast.

1G RAM in the mini with a 5400rpm HD, 1.25G and 4200rpm, and 1.5G in the MDD, 7200rpm.

I'll have to *find* something that generates beach balls, because I haven't seen any yet.

Spotlight was indexing and it didn't seem to slow anything.

Ah...much better now. Spent the afternoon on a previous commitment to babysit the nieces, and came back to a nice, speedy machine. Whatever Leopard was doing immediately after the install has apparently finished.

It would have been nice if Apple had designed Leopard to be upfront about it and either open up a dialog box stating whatever it was going to do with the warning "Your system is going to be agonizingly slow for the next hour or two" or show a progress bar so the user had some clue that something was going on in the background eating up processor time.

Oh well - I'm over it, but it certainly wasn't pleasant to eagerly try out the highly touted new OS, only to find it to be a dog at first...

So, Leopard can be installed ONLY on a firewire drive?

"So, Leopard can be installed ONLY on a firewire drive?" Are you seriously asking this?

Sorry, misspoke. Can leopard only be installed on a FW (not internal) drive?

AAA, I think you're asking if L can only be installed via a Firewired HD. I don't think there's such a thing as a "FireWire HD." Firewire just a type of connection that links devices together.

If that's what you're asking, then the answer is that L can be installed onto all types of HDs, via a variety of connection protocols. It can be installed from internal HD to internal HD, or to a separate external HD via Firewire (and I think USB 2.0).

I wouldn't install Leopard on any machine with less then 1GB of RAM and expect it to be fast. Good luck...
