They'll just have to hire them back. They're being opportunistic with their union-busting.

Why fire instead of layoff?

Then they can rehire at re-negotiated salaries. I'm sure the guilds will cry foul. I think to dump SNL is to dump Lorne Michaels which I doubt they'd be prepared to do.

Knowing management at NBC, it's punishment for the attempt at public solidarity.

Way to go, SNL...

NEW YORK (AP) — With their regular programs halted by a writers' strike, cast members of NBC's "Saturday Night Live" and "30 Rock" planned to stage a pair of live performances at a Manhattan improv theater.

The shows, held at the 150-seat Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre co-founded by SNL's Amy Poehler, will benefit the behind-the-scenes staffers who have lost work because of the shutdowns caused by the two-week strike by the Writers Guild of America...

150 seats, 300 tickets? That sure is not going to raise a hll of a lot of money.

Absolutely. And NBC has about 3 watchable shows in total. At least SNL draws numbers.

You're right.

150 seats at $20 bucks a head = $3,000... one might think the average SNL cast member could just have paid that out of pocket.

But I think the point was to make a public show of support for both the writers and the crew.

Just a silly gesture although they will probably get $50 or more a pop. Woo hoo.

The normal ticket price for that theater is $8 dollars. Tickets to the SNL show are $20 dollars.

I thought it was over when Belushi died.

I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

Me too. I haven't watched it since the early 80's.

I just read this section in the "Fark" book (great book, by the way). He points out that every year, the media claims, "SNL was much better 10 years ago." Except that they say that every year...

SNL jumped the shark before the second Reagan term. That it's still around is a testament to the lack of creativity of network television.

Such actions have much more value in terms of raising awareness than raising money.
And . . . here you are helping their cause by informing hundreds about it.
Deep down inside, I think you really might care about other people, sminty.

I say that SNL hasn't been especially funny since the end of 1979.

Were people in 1979 saying that the show "was much better" in 1951?

SNL has its peaks and valleys. I thought their work in the early 90s was outstanding -- they certainly had a lot of talented and funny people there at the time. It's mostly been in a creative valley for the past 10 years with fewer cast members crossing over into successful post-SNL careers.

I still keep one eye loosely on the show and they have the occasional funny moment still.

It can still be funny. Often they don't know when to end a sketch. You take the funny out of something if you drag it out too long. But:

Actually I do recall one funny post-Belushi skit...
