Nope. "Sit on it" is another one of those popular phrases on a bygone era.

AAA is right and Golfer is wrong according to the Urban Dictionary which is a vital part of my daily life because I am so out of popular culture. Still do not know who the @#$%& Howard is.

In this case, it's "Howard Cunningham", the father on Happy Days.

And 'sit on it' certainly predates Happy Days.

uh .. DUH...the DAD's name was Howard. That's WHY I thought of Happy Days originall.

"Mr. C" was Howard Cunningham.

Also, of course, Ron HOWARD the actor, was Richie/y?

Presumably, Howard was Howard Cunningham, Richie Cunningham's dad. Richie's mom, ever the prude, might have uttered this unmentionable to her hubby in a moment of frustration--for instance if the meatloaf was burning, Joanie and Chachi were caught holding hands, and Fonzie had another one of the Pink Ladies in his apartment over the garage. winking smiley

Aaaaaaayyyyy..

As a side note, my best friend growing up (mid 70's) had a black leather jacket with "Fonzie" or "The Fonz" written all over the inside lining.

We HAD a Fonz at our school.

A guy named Fonza something or other. And he was born way before the show came out, too.

"Sit on it" is a tv-safe variation of the phrase "sit and spin" (as distinguished from the "Sit 'n Spin," which is something altogether different and more pleasant from the 1970's).

Often on the show the phrase would be spoken as "Sit on it... and rotate!" I guess that explains why.

It is what it is.

So people didn't say "sit on it" in the fifties?

P.S. is anyone naming their kids Howard any more? I haven't met a Howard younger than mid-40s . . .

Remember the baby name voyager? Cool, old-tech web app.

type in the names or just beginning of names, and you'll see the graph change on it's popularity through time.

Howard was the 27th most popular name in 1920s and was 836th in 2006

Does that answer your question?
