My last Brother all-in-one was the worst turkey of a printer I've bought.

$30 is cheap though!

I've had a 5440CN running without issue for 3 years - been a great printer for us. I bought another one about a year ago for $50 AR as a backup but haven't even taken it out of the box since the first one is still running like a champ.

I had the 5280, I think. Really bad failure rate for others too, at least according to Amazon users. Brother has many satisfied users, and I had read their posts in this forum, which is one reason (along with a bargain) that I went that route. I figure it was that particular model that was a turkey.

I bought the 4440cn MFC new for $60 Saturday and had this posted in my thread just after pushing the "submit" button. 4440 has a few more features but this looks like the bomb. Doc feeder is something I have never seen on a all-in-one inkjet. Cartridges are $7 or so if you do not mind off brand. [www.ink-refills-ink.com]

spear,

Do you mean an Automatic Document Feeder (ADF)? If yes, then they have been on inkjet all-in-ones for years, just not the home-oriented models. An ADF is a must when it comes to an all-in-one. It makes faxing and copying documents with multiple pages a breeze.

That said, I will not buy another Brother machine. Feature for feature, you can't match them. However, the long-term reliability is questionable. The 5840cn we have suffers from ghosting issues. It's been fixed under warranty several times but the problem continues to return.

For under $50 after rebate, a brother is fine. But, if you want a truly solid reliable machine albiet one with fewer features, go for an HP. That's what we're going to do when the 5840cn runs out of ink.

I went ahead and bought one of these to have as a backup for when my MFC-420CN starts to have problems (not if, but when). It uses the same ink as my current model, so I don't have to worry about being stuck with extra carts. The MFC-420CN has the card reader built-in but I don't think I've ever used it.

The excellent and easy networking is the main reason why I like these Brother printers. We have 5 computers (both Mac and Windows) in the house that all can print on it with it hooked up to the Buffalo wireless router.

I wanted an HP and think they make the best but I could not find on that would work with my 10.2.8 system on my hard drive challenged old iBook. I had an 640c HP that was unbelievably reliable. Got busted when moving.

$30 for these features on what used to be an almost $200 machine is a real deal however.

its say s"pc fax capability". does that meant the fax feature is not available in osx? Or is is just a fax machine, and drivers aren't need for that feature. i was hoping faxes recieved could be accessed on the computer as well as recieved directly in paper form. anyone?

I saw that and figured it meant you could write text on your computer and never go to hard copy but fax direct from computer. Do not think it excludes Mac. Would be a nice feature if that is it.
