. . .in case you cared. . .ABC already gave full season to 'Dirty. . .'. . .no decision on 'Journeyman' or 'Bionic Woman' yet. . .

NBC Picks Up 'Chuck,' 'Life'
Freshman series will stick around for full season

NBC has given a vote of confidence to its freshman series "Chuck" and "Life."

The network has picked up the two shows for a full season. They're the first two NBC series to earn full-season pickups this fall and the second and third to earn extra episodes since the start of the writers' strike earlier this month. ABC picked up "Dirty Sexy Money" last week.

"'Chuck' and 'Life' stand out in a crowded TV landscape because they are smart, well-produced series with incredibly talented casts," NBC co-chairman Ben Silverman says. "Both shows are hitting their stride creatively, have developed loyal audiences and offer unlimited potential to grow throughout the season."

Just what constitutes a "full season" this year is still a little unclear. "Chuck" and "Life" will produce up to nine additional episodes, or as many as can be done whenever writers go back to work. Both received orders for extra scripts last month, which could help them get up and running quickly after a settlement.

Talks between the Writers Guild of American and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers resumed Monday, and though the two sides agreed to a news blackout, there were notes of cautious optimism after the day's session, according to various reports.

"Chuck," which stars Zachary Levi as an unwilling repository of government secrets, is averaging about 8.4 million viewers per week and a 3.4 rating among adults 18-49. It airs in the competitive 8 p.m. Monday timeslot and is usually in the mix for second place in the demo race, behind ABC's behemoth "Dancing with the Stars."

"Life" stars Damian Lewis as a detective who returns to the LAPD after wrongfully spending a dozen years in prison. It has held relatively steady in recent weeks, even as its lead-in, "Bionic Woman," has wilted in the ratings. The show averages 8 million viewers and a 3.0 rating among adults 18-49.

NBC hasn't made a decision yet on "Bionic Woman" or its other new series, "Journeyman."

"Chuck" has enough geek cred to be successful not just with the SMS crowd, but with aging geeks like myself.

Last night's show was a hoot- the hero was saved because his fellow spy asked him "Are you wearing a vest" in KLINGON.

I'll watch Chuck tonight and look for the miniStack.

I've got all of Chuck and Life and usually watch each episode twice, sometimes thrice.

I'm glad that they're popular shows or NBC would have cut them like Raines and maybe Journeyman.

Chuck has really impressed me with the geeky stuff. It's also nice that apparently they haven't yet sold product placement on the show, and you see devices from a variety of companies. (for example, the CIA girl carries an iPhone, but Chuck has a Nokia.)

(I wonder what % of the audience actually understood the references to Zork in the last episode)

I had to explain to my 16 year old daughter that they were speaking Klingon. Then I had to explain how I knew that. smiling smiley

Chuck does look too interesting but "Life" sounds like good cops and robbers stuff and will check it out.

I would have never known that was Klingon unless I read it here. If they mentioned it last night, I missed it!

I like Chuck, but have a hard time watching any tv at 8pm, so I usually miss it.

I didn't get the Klingon reference, and wondered what they were speaking. Now I get the joke (and it is pretty funny).

Sadly, I couldn't hear the Klingon speech- my 17 year old son caught it and pointed it out to me. We had a good laugh. Dang aging cochlea !

Other than the fact that the Buy More is the spittin' remake of Best Buy.

I like Chuck and knew it would get picked up.

Life is the best new show on the air. If you don't like the main actor, you need to watch "Band of Brothers" and you will soon appreciate his style of acting.

I also like Reaper...

I'm surprised there hasn't been more talk about Chuck on here. There's three of us still here
at home and we have to record it and keep it for our oldest so he can see it when he comes
home from college. It's the best new and only new show we watch I've watched Bionic
Woman but it's really not that good.

I can't stand Chuck's "sidekick."

His part plays so eff'in obnoxious, stupid, and ridiculous that it completely spoiled the show for me.

Too many shows have characters like this lately. At least most are supposed to be comedies, while Chuck is a lightweight "superhero" type series, IMHO. Do you agree that comic relief does not have to handled like this?

Without the jerk, I'd be more disposed to watch the show.

Morgan is the classic uninformed best friend. It's a solid device to give out exposition. Think of Dr. Watson in Sherlock Holmes. I think he's kind of an neat guy. I love the asian girl. She has played some strange characters, and I really like them all. I've seen her on Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, ER, and West Wing. She's a good actress.

iajim, I'm afraid I have no tolerance for Morgan. He's just too intrusive. There are a lot of really stupid movies that have had big box office, so I guess there are a lot of viewers out there that think this type of imbecilic behavior is funny. I sure don't know how anyone can stand Morgan's intruding on every scene he gets near. For me, it totally interrupts the continuity of the story line.

But, as I always say, "that's just my opinion, I could be wrong." smiling smiley
