What is the most remote, distant geographic location you've been?

Physically speaking, what non-city/urban place that you have been to is the remotest from like where you are now?

eg: Siberia, Antarctic, Sub-Saharan desert, etc.

Rural Georgia.

300 miles south of the tip of South Africa. I'd taken off in a 41' sloop with a crew of five, headed for Reunion Island, and within 12 hours a storm turned into a Force 9 gale and drove us in the opposite direction for 6 days. We tipped twice, and that second time as we were trying to right the boat, I thought this is the loneliest place on earth.

In terms of land, it was Farquhar island, an 8 sq. km spot that is part of the Seychelles Islands north of Madagasgar. About 70 inhabitants.

Five miles north of the sign marking the Arctic Circle is probably the most distant, but Fort Liard, Northwest Territories actually felt like the most remote.

Top of a 2500 meter high 'mountain' in Baluchistan, Pakistan. Three of us free climbed the side of the mountain with surveying gear. Before we started up, we met a boy with a small herd of goats and a camel. The one guy from Pakistan spoke to the boy, who said 'there is a way up the mountain' and pointed.

When we got to the top a few hours later, scratched, tired, and sore.... there was the boy brewing tea over a small fire. He laughed, and pointed out the nice smooth trail leading up the back of the mountain...

That night you could see for miles, and there was perhaps one cooking fire that we could see. It was like being on the surface of another planet.

Doesn't really compare with most of the ones posted (particularly Tuqqers....)..

Eastern Oregon...
I've driven through lots of the western US as a kid with family... but I don't every recall driving for more than 45 minutes without seeing another car on a supposedly "main" highway.

In Eastern Oregon, I drove for a long time before I noticed that there was NO ONE else around. No cars. No houses. No stores.
Once I started keeping track, I drove for 45 minutes before I saw another car.

Even through rural Montana, Wyoming, and North Dakota there were more cars and people.

Beautiful drive, but I'd hate to have had a breakdown...

Worldwide it'd have to be the Yasawa Islands, a nearly uninhabited chain of islands (no electricity in any of the villages) in Fiji.

In the U.S. it'd have to be my dissertation research area in central Esmeralda County, Nevada. It's a big county and it used to have the claim of least populated county in the U.S. I did most of my work far offroad, so I could be out there a week and not see another person. Definitely a bit lonely <understatement>.

Pangirtung, NWT ( a few miles south of the Arctic Circle)

Although I did some glacial ablation studies further south on a remote glacier on Baffin Island in Frobisher Bay, NWT... that was technically further from any human settlement (150+ miles).

On the African continent, I visited the Dogon people in North Central, Mali... didn't quite make it all the way to Timbuktu smiling smiley State department had a travel ban at the time do to political unrest with the local Tuareg tribes in that area.

Paul F. - you thought eastern Oregon was lonely, try U.S. 50 between the Nevada/Utah border and Fallon in western Nevada! No one within a hundred miles, several times!
