POLL: do you have a gaming console?
Posted by: space-time
Date: December 02, 2007 01:31PM
I am 36 and I never had one. Son is 2 and he is NOT getting one anytime soon. I will buy him books, but not a gaming console.

That being said, I think I am in minority here. I also don't have a HDTV yet, let alone a blue ray or HD-DVD player.

So, do you have a gaming console? which one? who plays on it, you or your kids (or your parents?)

I think it's gonna be fun to find out smiling smiley

Nope - also no HDTV, or blue ray or HD-DVD player, although I think we are getting close on the HDTV - maybe during the Super Bowl sales.

My Dad had an Atari 2600, then my first was a Nintendo GameBoy. The next I one I got was a Nintendo 64 and that was the last one. I enjoy playing but I don't really have that much time to play games now, all this Macresourcery is enough of a time allocation.

I have a hard time justifying the cost of a console. There are only a couple of games that I'd be interesting in playing on each one.

OTOH, I have a Nintendo DS Lite and find more stuff to do with it all the time. It's also a nice way to distract my nephews.

son (14) has a PS2 and a PSP. i've never touched them - except to confiscate!

hold out on getting video apparatus for your child. i think it's for the best. i didn't give in until my son was 12. he used to read a LOT more before they entered our lives...

No interest in gaming whatsoever.
Brother and neices have a wii which I saw for the first time on T-day, and I was impressed that it actually incorporates physical activity-- way, way more than they'd get watching T.V.
But I think my main concern would be . . . whether not having something that the other kids take for granted will affect your kid's ability to connect with others . . .

No gaming console or HDTV. Heck, I just got my DVD player a couple years ago. Of course, maybe it is because I am a single female and I try to limit my geek tech stuff to my Macs. smiling smiley

I'm a grownup, too. No gaming of any kind for me. (Well, except for a small addiction to solitaire, but that doesn't count!)

You know I hear this all the time. There's absolutely nothing wrong with books, my sons
have had plenty of them through the years. They also had gaming consoles, lots of
them, my NES, my SNES, N64, PS1, PS2, GameCube, Wii and a xBox360. My oldest
will be a sophomore, after his first semester there, working on a dual major in Chemistry
and Biology at a private college. He took lots of AP classes in high school. My youngest
a Senior in HS and is ranked in the top 10 out nearly 300 students in class, despite the
fact that he has MD.

This is not your case but I hear people blaming their kids problems on everything but
themselves all the time. You have to be there for them, read to them at night until they
finally say, "Daddy you can stop reading to us at night." , put time in at school
volunteering so you'll know what's going on there and you have to know where your kids
are at all times. We never dropped our kids off at the Mall while we dined somewhere
else, I see and hear about that one all the time.

Greylocks you waited to long, he was probably very bored with books by 12 and needed a new
outlet. My sons both still read a lot. My youngest read the last Harry Potter in less than 36 hours.

I have a 50" HDTV with an HD-DVR.

I've had a lot of consoles (Pong, Magnavox Odyssey, Vectrex, ColecoVision, Nintendo Entertainment System, Sega Genesis, 3DO, Playstation, Nintendo GameCube, XBox) but own none right now. We do have a Nintendo DS Lite which is neat.

We'll probably get a Wii next year for family game nights. Fun.

We don't have a HD TV, a BlueRay or a HDDVD Player. Don't plan on upgrading the TV for a few years and certainly not buying a BlueRay or HDDVD player until the "war" gets sorted out.

There are lots of "grownups" in their 50's and above that are gamers. I remember being surprised at how high the percentage of older women gamers was.

Largest gaming group is women over 40.

We currently have an original xbox. My B-in-L bought it for my wife because there were a couple racing games she liked. The Wii is mucho fun. If I were to buy one now, it'd be that.

Right now it's cheaper to buy a console than a blue-ray DVD player. Many are buying them just for that.

I can't read most printed material very well (physical "syndrome" they tell me), at least not in long duration. It depends on how the material is designed, but for the most part I have a hard time reading printed materials so that made getting through school painful enough I don't read books if I don't have to. The positive side effect is I have an extreme advantage in spotting problems with information layout.

There are very few games on a console I'd ever play. Consoles are like NASCAR to me - build something powerful from the ground up to be weak. Gaming PCs can display graphics much better and offer much better control.

Hmm...last gaming console must have been the Atari 2600. Still in my teens when that came out. In 1981, I got my first computer, an Atari 400. THAT was the ultimate gaming machine for me at the time! It could take over a 1/2 hour to load a game from a cassette, but the carts were instant joy.

Have since got away from gaming, but last year I was really stoked on getting a Wii, and almost pulled the trigger. That is, until I discovered just how hard they were to obtain. I have since lost interest.

P.S. Anyone remember the Atari Lynx? I had a couple of those and they were a real hoot! Not a console, but this thread reminded me of them.

Atari 2600, PS, PS2 and PSP. Got a PS3 on launch and sold it for a nice profit
I don't play the PS2 too much anymore, but Guitar Hero is fun and I love all the Gran Turismos. When the PS3 has GT for it, I'll probably buy it.

PSP is the best– lots of games, and I have Sony's LocationFree, so I can watch my Tivo from anywhere.

HDTV recently (to go with the Tivo Series 3, but no interest in watching bad movies on an HD or BR DVD player.

I own all three of the latest gaming consoles (Wii, XBOX 360, and PS3) as well as two original XBOX consoles, a PS2, and a Gamecube.

Guess that makes me not grown-up.

I love using my PS3 to watch Blu-ray movies and I am about to be able to use my XBOX 360 to watch HD DVD movie too.

JJ

P.S. Forgot to mention that I am 37. My first computer was a Commodore VIC 20.

I bought the family a Wii earlier this year. We all love to play it. It's a kick to play each other on tennis, bowling and golf.

There is a standing rule that homework is finished before anything else: video games, phone calls, etc. My oldest sticks to that rule without a fuss.

I bought her a Bondi iMac 233 when she was 2 1/2 years old. She loved to go through the learning books on CD. Then she progressed to education games and now into some video games. She is an avid reader and pulls a 3.75 gpa.

Just like anything; it can be overdone. Hasn't been a problem here.

Now don't talk to me about my eBay addiction.

I also love Burnout 3! There's something very satisfying about the smashy-smashy element to that game. I haven't gotten around to getting the latest installment yet. In fact, we haven't bought any new games in quite a while. (We have a PS2)

Maybe I'll get some new game(s) for birthday/Xmas, but we don't have a lot of time for gaming at the moment.

We have talked about getting a HDTV, but I don't think either one of us is very serious about it at the moment. No plans at all to get a Blu-Ray player or a PS3, though the Wii is pretty tempting.

Kids have Gamecube, and each have a Gameboy Advance.
There is gooood chance they are getting a Wii for Christmas smiling smiley

I have an Xbox (original) for when the kids come and stay with me.
Sister and brother in law have a PS2, PSP, and a stand up arcade console, and Sis has a Gameboy DS.

No HDTV yet, though we are researching and pricing, and saving our pennies.

No BluRay, or HD-DVD. I am also waiting to see who wins the format war.

Nintendo rules this house. We waited till school was out for the Wii. It is in the living room with the Cube that has an adapter to play GameBoy games on the TV as well. A couple on N-64 stations and a Play Station. This Christmas a PS2 will arrive so the girl can play Kingdom Hearts. GameBoy color, GameBoy SP, GameBoy Dual Screen are the hand held systems that are floating about. The Dual Screen WiFis to friends and family for trading and playing.

The Wife and I were 8 bit Zelda fans before children and they grew up with Zelda and Nintendo.

We have a PS 2 and a gamecube. And a psp. And a ds. On the one hand, I think they're the scourge, except for DDR, for which I can't find any drawbacks. On the other hand, I wonder what happens when kids grow up and gain unfettered access to stuff like that. Do they go absolutely nuts on it? We've never had cable or satellite tv, but when we go somewhere that has it, mesmerized isn't the right word. The kids are completely gone. It's awful. Maybe they can be taught moderation? kj.

I have been playing on consoles a long time. I had an Intellivision when my friends had Ataris. I got a NES one christmas form Santa Claus, eventually bought myself a Playstation. Now I have an XBox 360 and no kids at 36 yrs old. It is a lot of fun and even has some old arcade classics available on it. I had no interest in HDTV until I got my 360. I have trouble reading anything on the SD old school TVs. It sucks when you can not read your ammo count or a download list you are looking through. Some of my favorite console games have been Gears of War, The Orange Box, Call of Duty 4, Zanac and Metal Gear Solid.

I decided a few years ago it was much cheaper to just go console than sink money into my PC. I've had a number of consoles over the years but currently have an Xbox 360.

I want to get a wheel - any recommendations? I have to put my vote in for Burnout as well. I keep waiting for Burnout Revenge to be $10 so I can purchase it used. I buy all my games a year after they come out. Can't justify $60 on a new game.

Oh - I'm 38 smiling smiley and my five year old and I love driving together! Last night we were drag racing and I smashed into him so I could win b/c he had the faster car. He wasn't very happy with old dad smiling smiley

No HD TV here, but I set up an Optoma EP 716 in the basement two years ago. I dont' get true HD b/c it's only 800x600 - but it can still almost do the 720p and it's very nice - especially when I drop back to pass in Madden 07!! 83" diagonal is awesome!

Picked up a Wii at the GameStop today, no waiting in any lines, or paying outrageous eBay prices!

Now to find a good deal on a Wii Play / Remote bundle.
And the $15 charging station so we don't add more batteries to the landfill.

Games are not at the top of the list in our house.
We have a GameCube that sees light use (1-2 times per week). My daughter (8) enjoys the more visuals games, not the twitchy arcade types. And she likes the DK bongos, don't really see any of those games or controllers for the PC. ;)

Over my lifetime I've had a 2600 (still have it, actually), original NES, then SNES (sold both of them), an N64 and PS1 (both in the attic); wife had a Sega that's also in the attic. She doesn't like to play, but sometimes will watch if the graphics are good & music isn't too repetitive. She liked to watch me play Final Fantasy while she was pregnant & had to lay in bed a lot.

I would like to get a 360 just to play Bioshock and a few other games. Are the Katamari series available for all platforms?

Had Pong, then when I first moved to the states picked up a Sega Genesis.

Later on I picked up the connectix playstation emulator so as I could play GT on my Wallstreet.

My kid got a PS2 from his grandfather which I later on replaced when it started having issues, he used it more for DVDs than games until recently, does a bit more gaming now. I picked up a PS3 primarily for Blu-ray but found myself enjoying some of the games you can buy from PSN. The PS3 likely sees an average of 2 hours a day gaming, mostly my kid getting up at 5am to play WarHawk, lol.
