Where to buy 10.4
Posted by: JEBB

We have an iBook G3 900 and a Powerbook G4 1.5GHz. The Powerbook came with 10.4 but it won't install on the iBook which currently has 10.3.9. Where can I obtain a copy of 10.4 that will install on the iBook G3? I'd like to have the same version of the MacOS on both.

This is your lucky day. Apple discontinued 10.4 once 10.5 shipped and supply in the channel is basically gone - EXCEPT....

We had it turned off on our site since we sold out. After it was turned off, we received 2 more copies in and it was never reactivated. Till about 2 minutes ago. Once those two are gone, that's it.

In case OWC's copy goes . . . have you thought about cloning your G4's system folder over to the G3, and then running the necessary updates?

'h,

While that will work, it's got 2 flaws.

1) always need the other machine around to re-clone in case something goes wrong.

2) some people like to LEGALLY own the software they use.

CompUSA shelves are well stocked with OSX 10.4 - at the full $129.99 list price!

i'd buy a $30 eMac disc off eBay. is your optical drive a DVD or CD?

The drive in my G3 iBook is a combo drive. But wouldn't an eMac disk also be made to be unable to work in an iBook?

most of the eMac and iBook install discs will work on older machines.

check ebay #s 360003776015, 230201818229

i'm pretty sure OWC was selling the eMac discs for a while.

I thought eMac install discs were notorious for not working on other machines. Am I thinking about something else?
