I fed up with crashes and freezes. I 've checked the RAM and
drives and a bazillion other things and it's time to do it
whether I want to or not. Any tips for better performance?
I'm going with 10.3.9 on my Dual 533 with 1.5Gigs of RAM.

Try a frickin' "laser beam."

Assuming you are installing OS X...

Don't install the printer drivers. That package is too big and you really don't need it. Just install the driver you need after you have reinstalled.

Also, use the combo updater for whatever OS you are installing. Don't update your OS version via Software Update.

Good move, Grateful, especially if it's been years since it was done. I've basically done the same thing about every 2 years, and every time I cuss the process before I do it, and thank the process afterwards.

My suggestions:

* aside from docs, images, and a few other things, don't copy anything over.

* Rebuild even your User account.

* Reinstall every application from a new .dmg, or the installation disk. Just take your time, knowing everything is all shiny and new, and you're not porting over problems.

* Take a bunch of screenshots of stuff like your Email settings, DreamWeaver settings, etc.


Report back, too, once you're done. I'm always curious to see what the speed increases are. I always get a few.

Thanks tuqqer, It has been a while on the 533. We must be in
alignment. I told my wife I'm starting clean, no moving of emails back or
anything. I've got all that crap backed up if I absolutely have to have
something. I keep all my movie trailers, images and music stored on
a seperate drive. I actually did take screenshots of all my email accounts
and stuff. I'm going to go with the Combo update like jj said that
was one I didn't think of. I'm on the Cube right now which has always
been rock solid, knock-on-wood.

I am doing that now. I have two drives and am operating OS X on one while I redo the other. I installed OS 9.1 and software updated to OS 9.2.2. My OS 9.2.1 disk just seemed to be more of an update than an install. Then I added AppleWorks because if I do not add it while in OS 9 I do not get some of my favorite fonts like Chicago. The Toast version I have must be installed on 9 then upgraded to OS X. These are little things that I have noticed during the many installs of different versions of OS X over the years on my Pismo. I tried once to go cold turkey without a real install of OS 9 first and classic is just not complete without the original. This is the first clean swipe of my tower since I have owned it but two drives have bought me the longer time before this needed maintence.

I have just put a bunch of Adobe apps on today because Photoshop 7 works better that way and each time I learn something new. Like Tugger said, keep it fresh. I may have to update my TextSoap from 3 to 4 and maybe pay again but for the most part I have hardcopy of my software registrations and copies in my Dot Mac emails or emailed copies to my wife before the writing of zeros to the harddrive. The best planning has the fewest headaches but there will always be something.

I have OS9 installed on a 4 gig partition on a different 20Gig HD.
I'm putting OSX on a Seagate 80gig. Good Luck to you too and I'll
keep everyone posted. It 's suppose to rain or snow tomorrow so I
figured it's as good a time as any.

I'm getting close to something usable. Mail, Firefox, etc.
are all up and running smoothly. I'm slowly getting my
Bookmarks in Firefox back, had a ton in the old version that I
never used anyway, after a day or two I won't even miss them.

You're acting like this is a Windows machine, which--in years past--pretty much required that kind of thing.

Is this what Macintosh has come to? Nuke and pave every couple of years to get rid of the "crud"?

It seems like Macintosh is becoming more like Windows every day.

* repair permissions every 30 seconds.

* Stand on your left foot with your right hand in the air and sing "God Bless America"

* Wear a tinfoil hat.

* Unplug and physically remove any and all networking components from the house while you're doing this.

* Run out to the local internet cafe every 3 minutes to post "XX minutes into nuking/paving my system" notices here

Yes, it's a sign of a general downturn of society as a whole.

Either that, or it's simply a method some of us use to keep our Macs running well. It's mainly for those who don't know a lot of the underlying technology in computers, but nonetheless make their living from them.

but....Macintosh never used to be this way.

My point is, if you're going to buy into the "I need to nuke and pave my system every 2 years," you're one step closer to "Oh, well, it's no different than a Windows box."

I'm still running the same install of OS 8.6 from 1999 on a daily work machine (8600 with a G3) My beige G3 still has 9.1 on it from 2001.

Nuke and Pave is only a last resort. At least on a mac it isn't a weekend project (or it shouldn't be) involving the sacrifice of a chicken.

Exactly--but there seems to be an awful lot of chicken-sacrificing going on over the past couple of years.

Could these be switchers who simply expect that that's how computers work? Put it in your calendar every 6 months or year to pick up live chicken on Friday, block off Saturday and Sunday for the annual nuke-and-pave?

10.3 came out, and there was a flurry of discussions about whether to just let the installer upgrade or go out and buy a chicken and unplug the phone for the duration of the nuke and pave.

10.4 came out, same thing.

And we even hear these same discussions when 10.x.1, 10.x.2, 10.x.3, and so on come out.

The Macintosh world isn't so Macintosh anymore, I think.
