Posting from a MacBook Pro

I want to encourage those of you still on the fence to buy a MacBook Pro. I bought one about two weeks ago, and I am in love. It's the best computer I've had since I bought an original iMac. Impossibly, it's faster than my dual 1.8GHz G5, both for general use and for Unreal Tournament 2004. Using VMWare Fusion, I can run Windows apps when I absolutely HAVE to for work. And I can finally take all my writing, email, music, and office stuff with me. Thanks to Time Machine, I have an ongoing backup for the first time in my life, ever. I'll even be using iMovie next session to create some mini videos so I don't have to keep lecturing about the same stuff repeatedly.

I'd had Linux laptops before. I miss Linux somewhat - I can always load it under Fusion - but I suddenly find myself *doing* more on the Mac. The whole relationship with my computer has been inverted. Instead of focusing on whether I'll be able to do something or not, or tweaking settings, I just get stuff done and go on with my life.

It's true, Apple may come out with some amazing touchscreen thing in January. But as far as traditional laptops go, this thing is really the pinnacle of development to date. When a piece of equipment meets or exceeds _all_ of your expectations across the board, for weeks at a time, it's phenomenal. It's fun to use.

It's a Mac.

Best. Computer. Ever. (as of 2007)

6TB? Do you realistically need 6TB of storage available online at any given moment?

You're just being funny, right?

Nope, not funny.
And yes, I do need all of it online.

Some truth to that as I do a lot of mucking about with my ThinkPad running Xubuntu 7.10. Yet, if I step back and just get down to business, I'm remarkably productive. I have my browser, my media player, my email client, my chat application, my word processor, and my DVD ripper. That's all I ever really do on the ThinkPad besides the times I have to boot into my linux live CD to do data recovery for work. Then it's all business.

Oh, the MacBook Pro is a nice piece of hardware. I got to spend about five hours playing with one last week as I migrated address book, email, and performed other miscellaneous setup for the CEO of the Big Contract. I needed to move his whole work life from his Sony Vaio to his MacBook Pro. Nice hardware, an outright pleasure to use.
