Apple's Christmas gift to all of us

Apple has filed an updated patent application for a technology that would give it control over its software that is similar to Microsoft's much-criticised Windows Genuine Advantage.

Windows Genuine Advantage is the mechanism that Windows uses to validate copies of its operating system, with the company claiming it is one of the main ways of preventing illegal software copying.

I've said this for a long long time...love the products...hate the company.

Apple has always serialized it's pro software along w/ iWork. Maybe we shouldn't jump up and down until they do something different. And this is an UPDATE to an existing Apple patent anyway, one which it has yet to implement in any s/w yet. They could have with 10.5, but they did not. What does that tell you about Apple's "activation" plans? Tells me they have no present plans to use an activation scheme.

Also Microsoft, even though they are still using it, have backed away from forced shutdown of systems that the WGA thinks are invalid. They've had way too many problems with it.

Not perfected yet.

Maybe not this particular method, I can't really say one way or the other (can you?), but there are activation schemes around (M$, Adobe, Quark) if Apple really thought it was necessary. Also, regular serialization is pretty old. Again, I think Apple is just protecting their IP here, and doesn't have any specific plans to require activation just yet, especially on consumer based products.
