Bittorent users-- question

Using Azureus, if that matters . . .
When is space on the hard drive "taken"? When a torrent first starts to download, all at once for the full file size, or bit by bit as the file comes in?
Asking because I see odd jumps of many gigabytes at times, i.e. it can seem to go from 20 GB remaining on the drive to full when only a few GB of files seem to be complete.
Thanks . . .

I can't speak for Azureus, but rtorrent (command-line torrent client), reserves the full size of the file on disk when it starts.

When it loads the torrent file, or when the torrent file first finds a seed?
