I do need a VESA adapter?

I was given a monitor arm. The arm appears to have holes for mounting in a 50mm square pattern (4 holes, 50mm apart from center.)

I think the Apple VESA mounting kit enables a 20" Al Cinema display to be mounted to an arm, although it seems like it uses holes 100mm apart.

Assuming this is all correct (I've never dealt with mounting a display before) where do I get a 50mm to 100mm adapter? I googled and didn't come up with much.

I've never seen an adapter sold by itself.

I've seen some monitor arms come with an adapter, I've seen some with a plate with two sets of holes (which doesn't always work) and I've seen some that you have to oreder with the plate you want.

I used to have some ergotron adapters lying around, but I think I've used them all (some reason as your need).

Maybe ergotron will sell one.

like, billb, got some ergotron stuff around here, too; definitely have a 75 to 100mm adapter, so size changing adapters do exist, but no 50 to 100's w/ the equipment I've seen so far... intuitively, that's kind of a big jump in either direction; a 100mm mount seems like it would be overkill for a 50mm object, and 50mm mount seems like it would be too flimsy to support a 100mm object, though being given a mount, the desire to make it work is understandable. IOW, be sure your 50mm widget will safely support that nice 20" Al display; don't want it bouncing on the floor. Also, be careful, as adapters push the mounting point out a bit, and each little scootch drops the supportable weight by a significant amount. Good luck.

Sometimes it is what it is...
and then there's times when it's really better.

Check out monoprice.com and wall brackets. Seem to remember it was at the bottom of the page. Sorry about no link.

First question.:
Are you trying to mount a 20" Apple Aluminum display??
If yes, then you must use the Apple VESA mount.
And yes, it will mount to that arm.
The Apple VESA mount uses the two bolts that mount the stand.

I am trying to mount a 20" Apple display. I do know I need the $29 mount kit, but I was under the impression that the mount kit only allowed it to be mounted on mounts with 100mm hole spacing. That's why I thought I needed the 100->50 adapter.

The display seems pretty light without that metal stand? I'm pretty sure the arm could handle it.

Should that work? Looks like it should, no?

I think the apple vesa mounting kit works with even the 30", which is why they use 100mm. Much heavier display.

Whomever gave you the arm didn't give you everything, there is the plate that mounts to the arm. Yes, the Apple VESA adapter requires a 100mmX100mm arm, just looked at mine. From the Apple store.:
"The Cinema Display VESA Mount Adapter allows your Apple flat panel display (anodized aluminum) to be used with a variety of alternate mounting solutions such as wall mounts and zero footprint articulating arms based on the VESA flat panel mounting interface (FPMI). The new Apple flat panel family features a removable desktop stand. The Cinema Display VESA Mount Adapter Kit contains a tool that allows you to remove the desktop stand and to attach the VESA Mount Adapter to the display. The display is now ready to attach to any VESA compliant mounting solution that has a 100mm x 100 mm attachment.

The Apple flat panel display line (anodized aluminum) with the VESA mount adapter attached complies with the VESA MIS-D, 100, C version of the specification."
