well, a christmas gift that i wanted came to be this year and now i'm looking for recipes to test out. any and all suggestions welcome, but looking for the savory dishes (didn't know one could make dessert with a slow cooker, but it's apparently possible).

oh, i'll skip the suggestions for haggis filling, thanks

BBQ Brisket

5 lb Brisket (I cut mine into two or three chunks)

Mix in bowl:

Large (28 oz?) jar chipotle salsa (2(roasted pepper salsa good too)
1/2 cup worchestire sauce
1/2 to 1 cup brown sugar (to taste)
1 clove chopped garlic

Put the brisket in the pot, pour mixture over. Cook all day. In last hour, break up meat into chunks.

Makes great sandwiches....but we use it for burritos with avocadoes, cheddar, and sour cream.

I don't care much for slow cookers. OK for soups, stews, beans.

But make sure you brown, saute vegetables (for soups) and meats before finishing off in the slow cooker. In my opinion, if you do not do this, food lacks flavor.

So I guess good for finishing off food, that you do not want to watch closely. Maybe chili, spaghetti sauce.

I cooked a roast in a slow cooker, recently. It was good, I browned it first. It was not as good as the roast and veggies I slow cook in a black iron pot in the oven. Same for a roasted chicken.

deco, it wil not be my only method of cooking, just looking for some things that are done well in this type of cooker. i know of some great Mexican recipes in clay pots, etc. that i'm aiming to try at some point. i don't believe it will ever substitute for a roast chicken in a dry heat oven, though.

My sis-in-law made a pork roast marinated in italian salad dressing
in the ol' crock this past weekend... it was falling apart in my mouth.
Add those bleu cheese mashed potatoes, and wow!

watch Sandra Lee on FOOD network or get her books. . .she has reintroduced cooking with a slow cooker. . .

Her recipes can probably be found on the FOOD network website. .

Lots of ideas!
Ugly site though...

thanks, that site is a good resource.

mmm.... jerky (at first i was wondering how jerky was done in a slow cooker, but then realized that "slow" here just refers to the time, not the cooker)

Over our objections, a friend made risotto in her slow cooker. 2 hours later (the recipe's recommended time for slow cooking), the entire thing was paste. Sounded like a dumb idea from the get-go, and she'd just repapered the den. No justice.
