It's a mix of garlic-like scents that not only makes iced water taste bad, but even your hands from just handling it. I have no experience with ice makers. What should I look for?

A filter cartridge inside the refrigerator. They are about $30, depending on your brand.

If you can't find it, get the manual out.

How old is the ice? Usually when ice in the ice maker gets old, it picks up nasty smells. Have you tried dumping out all the ice, cleaning the "bucket" and starting anew to see if that helps?

Ice makers need to be cleaned. Frozen or not it is still standing water, eventually it will go bad. I assume this is a built in "home" fridge we are talking about. I would shut down, drain it, change the filter cartridge, check the manual, there may be tips on flushing it out better.
I have two ice makers at work so periodically on a slower day, I shut down one, drain and sanitize the bin, along with any exposed surface I can get to. It has a "flush" setting to clean internally, then I turn it back on to make ice. Our board of health is fussy about ice makers, I guess not every one cleans them as they should. I have learned to keep them happy.
You probably can't do as much to a home unit, but maybe this will steer you in the right direction.

This is a fridge that came with the house when we bought it last May. The manual isn't around and I haven't gone searching the web for one yet. It's a built-in that is all in the upper freezer (no front door access). We have dumped all the ice and cleaned the bucket a couple of times, but that didn't solve the problem. Sounds like I need to locate where the filter is housed.

'Happened to me last year.

I defrosted it and cleaned everything out with dilute bleach and it STILL made stinky ice.

Then, on a whim, I dropped the temperature in the freezer one notch. No more odor or flavor.

It was already set at close to the coldest temperature and was sitting at just above zero F... Apparently, that wasn't cold enough to keep stuff from growing in there.

'Problem is, now I don't trust that ice maker. I've been conditioned to avoid ice from my own freezer.

I've got the whole unit pulled out and have it soaking in vinegar. It looks like it doesn't have a filter unless it's on the back of the fridge.

I have the problem too. I suspect that, since the air is circulated throughout the freezer and fridge, it is picking up the odor of any onions or garlic in there. We gave up and buy our ice in bags.

The vinegar seems to have solved the problem. However, when I had the whole unit out to clean it, I noticed that it's been "eroded" away in areas and it's probably time for a new one anyway. The bottoms of the ice cube trays have some noticeable discoloration and etching. The first batch of ice came out clean and odor free, so we may live with it until we start the kitchen remodel this summer.

Always notice that in friends with icemakers. Some are undrinkable. Think the odors around getting picked up is it. There should be product to address this if possible. Sounds like it would be popular product.

Like baking soda?

baking soda isn't enough

It's not just aging water, its aging water in the filter as well.

Any water sitting still inside a carbon cartridge will begin to putrify over time. And that smell sticks with the plastic ice bins too, so wash thoroughly, keep baking soda fresh and toss the ice continuously.

It's unfortunate that you can't flush the filters before filling the trays. Even the faucet mount filters suggest running for 60 seconds to flush out various microbes (even with silver nitrate) before using.

Therefore, you might want to consider ditching the system in your freezer for a $100 table top unit or one of these...... assuming 1.1 tons of ice per day is enough. [www.hoshizakiamerica.com]
