New hard drive is here for MacBook. Now, how do I format it?

I'm about to install it. I know it needs to be formatted (someone mentioned it here). I'm assuming I do that before installing the OS. I just need to know how...

You boot from the OS CD and in the menu there is an option to go to disk utility. From there you can format the freshly installed drive.

Make sure it's a GUID partition.

Two possibilities:
1) Put it in an external enclosure, format it using Disk Utility
2) Put it in MacBook, start up with CD, format it with Disk Utility

Format in HFS+ (Journaling Enabled)

If you plan on using BootCamp, you must format as GUID, not Apple Partition Mapping.

WAAHHH! I don't have the tool to take the little cover off the old hard drive! Oh well, I guess it'll be later this evening after I can send hubby to the store for one...

If you have some jewelers screwdrivers around the house, sometimes you can use a flat bladed driver in those little torx screws.

is it actually a torx screw, or is it just that little rubber thing that looks like a torx screw? I replaced a drive in a friend's macbook, and I don't recall needing anything more than a small screwdriver.

Small allen wrenches (hex keys) will also work in torx screws (and vice-versa).

Risk stripping the philips screws on the L shaped cover or the torx screws on hard drive bracket to save a couple of dollars. Not worth it in my opinion. The memory/hard drive cover is the hardest. Get a good screwdriver so you don't strip the screws.

I misplaced my torx driver when I went to replace my son's macbook drive. However, since the torx screws on the drive have a big square head it was quite easy to clamp onto the outside of the head with a small vicegrip and turn it that way. Also, that method does not risk stripping the torx fitting.

What slbett said.

It's just not worth the risk of stripping a screw head.

The right tool...

Doesn't everyone here already own one of those nifty little Newer Technology mini screwdriver sets that OWC sells?

[eshop.macsales.com]

Hrm, my set is different from this one. Mine has two flatheads, two phillips and three Torx (T6, T8, T10).

Owning it doesn't mean that you can find it when you need it.
