Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III and 802.11g --- fun toys!

Here at the paper they moved us down the hall with Photo, so we get to check out some cool toys now. They use a variety of Canon and Nikon but are auditioning new toys from Canon now.

One of the photogs is walking around the lengthy hall firing frames (hi-res JPEG). The pics show almost instantly on the laptop here.

What makes it practical (I guess) is that if you're out of range, the camera automatically sends the images as soon as it gets back within range of the router.

Another cool thing is a photog can control a stationary camera if they bring a laptop and fire the stationary camera using Canon's software.

Maybe none of this is new but it sure is cool to see happen in person!

Just fired off a round of 20-30 frames --- all images (not thumbs, but hi-res) appear on the wireless Mac so fast it's for all practical purposes instantaneous.

I so want this ... even though I have zero use for it. And it comes as no surprise the Mark III makes my DigiReb look like a InstaMatic.

Just showed us a shot from the Mark III: subject had background lighting only, 6400 ISO. No noticeable noise. Sick.

Perhaps your wife needs one of those more than, say, a del Sol or a Mini?

I was closing in on one until I realized the news biz is going to require me to get an HD camcorder. I am surprised they aren't testing out camcorder instead of an $8k still camera.

Looks like you are talking about the 1D mark 3 not the 1DS mark 3. One is $4k and shoots 10fps and the other is a s 21mp monster for $8k.

Canon's naming scheme is pretty stupid IMO.

Have fun.

Jeebus, they're still buzzing over this setup. Now they're talking about ways to leave a secured camera on-site for some hard-to-reach locations, and using a Verizon card and router out in the field so that an editor back here can edit and post images "as they are taken." RC-controlled cars ... editors remotely hitting the shutter ... and so on.

I too think that a camcorder could eventually replace the stills at some point. Either way the role of the photog will definitely change. They've already begun training reporters with point-and-shoots. Not many of these reach publication, for obvious reasons.

The industry trend is moving toward photographers carrying both until the technology looks good enough to carry just one. I did some still grabs recently from a 1080i cam and it looked surprisingly decent.

a buddy of mine uses an HD camcorder so this way they have video footage for the website and they can use the stills for the paper...
