How to convert dvd to play on iphone?

New to this process, any suggestions?
Seems like there should be an easier way, am I missing something here.

1. rip dvd into a video_TS file with mac the ripper (30min)
2. convert file to an mp4 using handbrake with presets set to iphone/ipod touch (120min)
3. import into itunes 7.6
4. convert it again (through the "advanced" menu option) to play on (iphone 60min)

I was surprised to find itunes wants to convert it again, Is that common or necessary? It makes another mp4 file that is about 10% bigger.
Have an easier way?

I rip to video_TS with MTR

Then I use my hand-dandy new turbo.264 from elgato to convert the video to iPhone. The turbo.264 is about five times faster on my iMac G5 than using Handbrake (1hr vs. 5 hrs.)

If you are going to continue to use Handbrake, I agree with jdc that there is an iPhone setting.

Sure enough, I had been using MTR because we like to write a dvd that will play on our TV. so I completely missed that ability of handbrake, thank you.
Anybody have an idea why itunes 7.6 wants to convert the mp4 file further?

Just use Handbrake, it's da bomb.

Yeah, and it's often a dud.

Handbrake is a one-step process with some DVDs. Some it won't deal with. Even MTR balks at some DVDs.

And for some reason, Handbrake's iPhone setting gives an mp4, which iTunes then wants to convert to an m4v.

There may be a difference between iTunes importing and copying a video file.

HUH?!?!
I have ripped over 700++ DVD's with HB, only 25 failures in the bunch, converted them using another method. I don't think that defines "often".

Yep, that's my problem. I am hitting the presets to iphone/ipod touch in handbrake. I have not tried loading up the mp4 file because I have not gotten my iphone yet but maybe they load just as well?
Thanks

That's weird. I've done exactly the same thing for my kids nano (I change a couple settings from the preset though) and the resulting files just show up in iTunes. No conversion. On the new mini, they just show up in front row, too. I think I change the compression type from h.264 to whatever the other option is, just because the h264 takes so long to compress. It doesn't look that much better on a nano, either. kj.

I've tried ripping/converting about 10 DVDs with Handbrake. 2 or 3 failures so far where it appeared to not recognize the disc or couldn't handle the particular encryption type. I will look for this new turbo.264 from elgato. If it is 5 times faster then hurrah I say. Never heard of it before.

What type of Mac?
The Turbo 264 gives diminishing returns the more powerful your Mac is.
Works great on my iBook.
Slows down the rip when I use it on my 3GHz QuadCore MacPro./

I don't think that defines "often".

I can only define "often" by my own experience, which I say qualifies as often.

I'm not a fan of the Turbo. I've had a tough time getting the right file, and audio has also been a problem-- frequently I get zero audio. It did speed up the process on my PB12 (1.33GHz) but my mini is much faster, so I don't use the Turbo.

Hmm...Using Handbrake here, (0.9.1) and it's a one step process from DVD to iPod Touch which shares the preset with the iPhone.

I've only done about 30 discs so far, but nary a hiccup yet with my setup.

You could get all of your settings in HandBrake set, do the rip, then simply change the .mp4 extension to .m4v. It might work. Give it a try, to avoid the last conversion by iTunes.

The reason that I say this is because I used to get .m4v files by default (my defaults may have been incorrect), or this might be on my PC using HandBrake... I would get files that itunes wanted to import. By changing the extension, the icon would change to Quicktime, which is where I want to view the content in anyway.
