Tivo's patent infrigment vs Dish is enforced. Dish to pay $74M

I'm a big fan (and shareholder) of Tivo, so this was welcome news.

Now if Apple would just ditch their AppleTV and buy Tivo for $1B, I'd be happy. Not likely to happen since recording TV isn't very profitable and would conflict with Apple's model of selling/renting content. AppleTV's downloading is eerily similar to Amazon/Tivo unbox.

I don't know that particulars of the case, but I'm not sure I agree with the ruling. Unless Echostar stole Tivo's actual software code, digital recording shouldn't be patentable; it's the logical extension of extant tech. I hate patent pirates.

Does this mean Tivo will dial back on the annoying ads that are growing in size and popping up everywhere?
