what does one do with old p/s cameras ?

Geez, that GE p/s on the dpreview.com front page is awfully tempting -- with GPS! What to do with the other 3 or 4 p/s cameras I have lying about. I guess they'll have to join the half-dozen film p/s I have lying about... to say nothing of all my 35mm, medium format and large format stuff. this is really starting to add up.

I'd buy a low-end digicam from you for my daughter. Her cheapo HP dropped & the battery cover won't stay on. She loves taking photo, and I want her to have her own camera for that reason. She's 8 and even had her own exhibit at a local gallery/store with high school kids!

CF or SD format would be great. Or if anyone has a link to a $20-$30 camera that fits that description.

The DPReview site specs are wrong, GPS is optional, and the camera has stabilization, the GE page.:

well, this is where my pack-ratedness comes into play. my "lowest end" digicam is the Nikon 995, which I secretly covet (I have taken 30sec shots with this and blown them up to 8x10 and they still look decent). I have a Canon A620, but I would need more than $30 for that... (takes awesome 640 30fps movies!)

Check garage sales. We had an old Olympus that we sold for $10. It worked fine, and it was snapped up almost immediately by a woman who was looking for a cheap camera for her daughter.

Who is GE? I mean really.... is GE making cameras? I can't see buying a camera
for over $100 that isn't by someone you know -- and has a history of also at
least knowing who actually makes the camera.

As for what to do with the extras? Keep one in the car all the time -- accidents, etc.

Also -- get some velcro. You can make a dash mount to get little vids of various things
like train crashes as well as street walkers, parades, your own car accident while you
screw with the camera, etc.

One of my brothers used his camera to catch hassle of single cop on 4 different old people
in FL -- which was instrumental in having cop fired for hassling people only with NY plates
and making 80 year olds stand on busy road while he did pat-downs, without ever calling
in the license plate BEFORE the stop, like is normal, to check for fugitive status, etc.

They had complained, but there was no record of the stop -- so deaf ear was turned.
I suspect that the velcro mount or glove box stored might be more useful that you
would anticipate.

The others... there is always a kid worthy of such.

I still use my Coolpix 995 too. As a matter of fact, yesterday my camera stuff showed up at work, and one of the things in my box of toys was a new battery for the 8 year old one that still works!

Give them to a local school photo or art program. My daughter's high school has both film and digital photo classes and they are always looking for cheap cameras for kids to use who can't afford to buy their own.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

Yeah, I would give the A620 to a worthy local organization. I'll have to look around. I have a couple of others lying about: one I'll keep and the other (if I can find it) will probably save for my kids to trash.
