As Net Applications measures it (more on its methodology below), the Mac’s market share stands at a record 7.57%, up 21.7% from Jan. 2008.

“Apple’s market share gains in December for the Mac and iPhone are impressive,” the report concludes. “However, for the last days of December, the numbers are nothing short of spectacular.”

The really good news for Apple, according to Net Applications, came in the last two days of the month, when Mac OS X hit 8.01%.

As someone who had to endure a lot of crap over the years from PC users; you can't swipe the smug smile from my face.

I never will forget the person who told me Apple will never amount to much and Gateway can do no wrong (circa 1999). He was a sales rep for Gateway. Laid off in 2001.

Wrong on both counts.

Paradigms change quickly in the tech world. Apple has to stay on their toes to keep the momentum going.

I sit on a man’s back, choking him and making
him carry me, and yet assure myself and others
that I am very sorry for him and wish to ease his
lot by all possible means — except by getting off
his back. - Leo Tolstoy, novelist and Philosopher

My friend said the same thing. I had just bought another Mac and he was working at one of the Gateway stores. He told me I was awful brave for getting a Mac. A couple of months later his store closed and he was out of a job.

Market share has very little to do with with quality though quality can help increase market share. Computers have become tools and or appliances. Companies and people want something they can depend on to just work. What is happening in the computer market now is what happened to the American automobile industry. The Honda's and Toyota's sales started to increase because they put out a more dependable product.

Market share of the OS is much different the machine market share. While Windows has a 92-96% market share, no computer manufacturer has any where near that market share.

This forum is made up of mostly consumers and not business. Now Dell for instance sells more than 80% of their computers (basic strip down models) to business. I can't find Apple's stats, but I would guess that 80% of their sales are to home consumers. At this rate, Dell sells only slightly more computers to home users than Apple does. That is why the Apple stores work where others have failed. Home users want to walk out with their computer.

Very good points slbett. What many people don't connect is that Apple is MUCH more than just a computer company. They also make some fantastic software. Not just the crapware that goes on the desktop and gets deleted the first time you log in. It is real, useful, reliable software. If Apple didn't have Macs and iPods, they could still be a leader in software. If Dell were to turn out the most gorgeous PC that was ever produced, but it still had Windows on it, and it had links to AOL, Compuserv, Norton AV, McCafee AV, and a couple pieces of crapware, then the computer would fail. If Dell ever gets smart and starts releasing some killer apps for Ubuntu AND the most gorgeous PC ever produced they could really rock the boat.

What is interesting is that the number that they are quoting is based entirely on Safari usage. I don't personally know anyone who uses Safari. Everyone uses Firefox on Macs that I'm aware of, so their numbers are probably a bit skewed, to the low side.

and Apple stock

We all know that all tech stocks are down lately. Apple has lost value after a record 1st quarter after a conservative 2nd quarter forecast. iPod sales INCREASE is less than the street had predicted and among other things. My question is, how were the iPhone sales taken into account in regards to iPod sales? Just how many are sold as and iPod/phone vs phone/iPod? I look at it as an iPod that can make phone calls. (my next iPod will be a touch) The results listed the iPhone sales separate.

My point is, the news sites and tech sites will see this as more Apple doom and say their market share will drop. They will ignore the fact that most companies forecasts are down.

One point that concerns me is how much Apple is a one man company. Does anyone think that Apple can prosper under someone else's leadership? Anytime the fate of a company is so much intertwined with one person it can't be a good sign.

Steve is definitely a commanding figure at Apple, but he doesn't work in a vacuum. He has surrounded himself with like-minded people. No one can replace him, but someone will fill the shoes. Phil Shiller doesn't seem like the person for the job. I'm guessing that Jonathan Ives is on the shortlist, but I don't know if he has the business sense or just the eye for design. Steve is a rare combination of the two.

The Arstechnia article has two market share graphs, one for Mac OS 7.6%
and Safari 5.6%.

To use visitors to their website as a basis for overall market share is bizarre. It measures only what they measured, percentage of visitors to their site. To infer the entire market from this figure has no basis. Market share has to do with money spent over a period.

Exactly! That's why I encourage people to use Safari.

It's not like it's a hardship or anything...

I like Safari & FFox. I prefer Safari, but I do like the gadgets for FFox.

I stuck with Safari, even though v1 was sort of like CyberDog. And I gave that a good chance too, back in 95-96. I liked it, actually.

The company that provided the figures is basing their survey on averages for 40,000 sites that they monitor. It is probably a decent representation of the market. If the numbers were JUST for ArsTechnica, I'd bet that it would be more like 60% Mac, 30% Linux, 10% Windows.

LOL, if only that were the case I would use Safari more. Lack of graphic tabs, no way to control image animations, no workspaces, weak ad blocking control...

I'm not sure what you mean by "graphic tabs" or "workspaces," but for me, any perceived weaknesses are outweighed by Safari's speed, compatibility, beautiful page presentation, and system integration.
