I can't wait to get an iphone but at&t is a dealbreaker. How long till it is available via other companies?

But that's if there isn't a loophole in Apples deal with ATT.
I wouldn't bet against Steve.

0 seconds if you're willing to jailbreak your iPhone. And what- about half of the iPhone buyers have done just that, right ?

I've never gone down that road before. Is it very hard? What is involved?

What functionality do you lose when you jailbreak and use someone other than ATT?

Is it just the visual voicemail thing?

Visual Voicemail is the only casualty that I'm aware of.

Verizon just told me that the LG Voyager is their answer to the iPhone and AT&T.

Does anybody here have it?

I think the worry with hacking your iphone is that some upgrade could either break your phone, render it useless or both. The problem is not in the hacking - that is apparently easy.

So I just go to the apple store, buy an iphone, and use the jailbreak software on it? Then I go to verizon and say i want to add it to my plan?

It would be nice to hear from someone who has done this. I'm also curious about all the cellular network stuff. I thought the iphone was made to work with at&t's network, will it work on verizon's network also? for surfing the web etc.

You need to go to a GSM provider. Verizon is CDMA. Both claim to be the best network.

I don't know that the newer iPhones can be jailbroken yet. I believe you need to get an older one with a serial number of XXX44XXXXXXX or lower. Might be wrong on this. As soon as someone has a way to unlock the new 16 gig one, I might make the jump. My company blackberry is on T-mobile and can't switch providers. I'm hoping that enterprise support comes soon. It would be nice to have one device to replace the blackberry and iPod.

First off, you need to unlock (not jailbreak) the phone to make it able to be used through other carriers. Unlocking simply unties the phone from your current carrier. A huge number of people in the U.S. and abroad have done this. Jailbreaking is something different and refers to modification of the iPhone software so that you can add unauthorized (by apple) third party applications, of which there are now hundreds. Unlocking is relatively simple and there are plenty of explanations on the web. Google it.

Second of all, only a few US carriers use GSM, which is for the most part a worldwide standard. AT&T is one, T-Mobile is another. Perhaps there are others but I don't know who. Phones made for GSM carriers won't work with phones made for CDMA, iDEN, etc carriers, no matter what brand they are.

Sounds like I need to make the switch to at&t or I need to settle for a phone from verizon. I haven't heard many good things about phones from verizon.

I am with AT&T, have been for some time and am pleased. I am going to stick with them also for the reason when the iPhone rates come down to earth I will be in position to take advantage without paying off contract.

Was at convention and saw some iPhones and never noticed how cool they are. I now officially lust for one. People love them.

Your only other carrier option for an unlocked iPhone in the US would be TMobile.

As for the Voyager being an "answer" to the iPhone: ROFL! That thing is a pathetic joke.

I was handed an LG voyager by a Verizon rep who sets up a table at my workplace due to unknown connections, and told it was an iPhone.

I meant to say unlock instead of jailbreak. It's been a long day.

A guy at work has a voyager and he spends a lot of time telling people how much better it is than the iphone.

For some people, the problem with at&t is bad customer service experiences, or bad coverage, or both.

I was a Verizon customer for many years. They had a poor selection of phones and wanted to charge you for every single phone function, and crippled Bluetooth to do so.

I didn't renew my last contract and made the jump to the 'Phone as soon as it launched. For *me*, at&t customer service has been outstanding. Very pleasant contact every time I've called them. NO complaints.

The signal has been much better everywhere I need to be. I've found no bad spots yet, they every carrier has some. Verizon was pretty weak in most places. Now either the 'Phone has a better radio (smtr and rcvr) and/or at&t has better coverage, but I get a much better signal than when I was with VZW.

For me, the move to at&t has been an improvement in quality, though at a price. I lost my corporate discount since new customers don't get one with the iPhone. (That may change, according to two at&t reps.)

I've been with AT&T=>Cingular=>AT&T for a few years; I've had a few snags but have always been able to work them out. Coverage has been fine. Customer service has been mostly adequate. I don't find errors in the billing process. All services received have been basically in line with what was promised. I have no interest in switching to another carrier.

Same here. I haven't had any problem at all with AT&T. When my phone broke they had a new one to me very quickly, and their service reps have always been helpful. The only downside is that in my area Verizon has better coverage. However, the AT&T coverage is second best and all the others are far behind.

I've never had any problems with AT&T, this time around with the iPhone nor the last time around several years ago. I probably never would have left them except for the fact that at one point I wanted a pay-as-you-go and Virgin seemed like the best choice then.

I don't think I can name one cell phone company that doesn't have former customers with tales of being burnt/screwed/hassled/gypped/etc. It seems to be a business that has a very high UNsatisfaction rating, probably because thanks to the internet we get to hear every single tale of woe instead of only those from our friends and families.
