Wireless Router Recommendations Please

Hi Folks,

I'm having lots of problems with my Netgear MR314 and am considering the purchase of a replacement router.

We're using an Intel iMac and MacBook wirelessly here, mainly to access the Internet with very occassional file sharing.

What variety of wireless router do you recommend. I'm interested in easy setup, good price and moderate speed.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

buffalo here as well.

I had a TRENDnet and I although it seemed I was connected, sometimes I could not get any pages to load. I had to disconnect and reconnect again (from the menu bar) to get web pages to load. I am trying to unload it. I do not recommend it.

I also have a very small FON router, I got it for $5.99 (I think I paid $13 with shipping and a high gain antenna) that I use mostly as a travel router rather than use the Hotel WiFi (which is usually weak) or be stuck at a table for wired LAN. I used the FON router in a few hotels and it worked great. Small and effective. I am not sure how well it works on day-to-day basis though. YMMV.

You cold do an Airport Express. It's no frills, but will work as a wireless router. One of the benefits I see is that it has an included USB printer sharing feature. Need to share a printer?

$99 brand new, refurb. $79

I'm a buffalo fan but the Linksys WRT54GL is extremely similar hardware and every bit as stable.

Yet another Netgear-to-Buffalo convert here. Buffalos show up on eBay fairly frequently although clearly a lot of people are on the lookout for them.

My second choice would have been Linksys.

I haven't been impressed by any other Belkin network products I've purchased...but come to think of it, that could have been due to the finickiness of the Netgear router I was using with them at the time.

My MR814 finally started getting flakey enough that I unboxed an older Buffalo WHR-G54S.

What a nice little router. A much stronger output, but it's g rather than my NetGear b. I'm still having trouble setting up the encryption, but hiding the SSID and using MAC address filtering will do in the meantime.

I'm very happy with this router. If I couldn't get another, I'd go with an Apple Airport Extreme base station, maybe an Air Capsule. More money, though.

Even though I probably won't do the dd-wrtwhatever thing, the Buffalo is a lot of bang for the buck. Finding one will be difficult.

I don't have deep feelings about it like the Buffalo folks, but my Belkin has been a solid performer for about 2 years.

Why do you guys keep commenting on Buffalos being hard to find? I must have been under a rock, did something happen to Buffalo?

I'm off to find some info now...

Apparently Broadcom has sued Qualcom for patent infringement regarding chips used in many manufacturers' routers. So there's been a ban on importing the Qualcomm chips and any devices using the chip.

Part of Buffalo's (and others) business now has a hitch in its gitalong, but that should improve down the road.
