How to get smooth onscreen type in AppleWorks?

There used to be a little haxie for this I believe? I thought it was no longer necessary but when I go to AppleWorks (X 6.2.9) the text looks awful. Is it supposed to look like this (non-antialaised and jagged as heck, bad spacing)? Anyone know the best way to fix this.

I thought this was handled system-wide via the Appearance pane in System Preferences.

you are correct. But somehow appleworks docs don't have smoothed type. I do have the preference to select "Font Smoothing" checked. And I've got the latest Appleworks version too.

I know there used to be a free utility/haxie to fix this in AW. Just can't remember the name.
