Tonight's official "Lost" thread (WARNING: SPOILERS!!! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!! :D )
Posted by: PeterB
Date: February 15, 2006 07:59PM
Let the torture begin... tee hee

I'm sure they will tease us with what happens if you let the counter get to 0:00... probably that will come at the very end of the episode as the final fadeout. B@stards.

Be on the lookout for the following:

1) More connections between the members of the island in their "pre-island" histories

2) Some guest stars you've seen before in other things (see Newt's thread below about this too)... this show makes great casting choices, IMHO

3) Ramped-up friction between the male leads -- after last week, it's only a matter of time before someone gets slugged

4) Rousseau... is she nuts, or isn't she? grinning smiley

Something definitely began to start up when the countdown ran
out. I guess Jack still doesn't know the combination.
Creepy episode but good. Also we know how Hurley is staying
so fat.

OK guys, I just did some screencaps. Keep in mind that my TV reception suckkkkkkkkssssss... I'm sure somebody with HDTV could do much better.

Here's one of the final symbols that come up:

... I would read these, left to right, as...

1) maybe a sword, like a cutlass?

2) no symbol came up that I could tell -- probably if one did, that would have been the "chevron five", and then who knows what would have happened? winking smiley

3) a feather or quill? stuck in a base?

4) definitely a bird, some Egyptian type?

5) not sure what this is; looks like the Eiffel Tower, tilted; or maybe a rocketship?

I suffer from the same sensitivity that you do. A few nuggets of wisdom were shared with me and I'm "trying" to incorporate them into my life. First, remember that nobody can hurt your feelings unless you let them. You can always reject what is being forced on you emotionally.
Second, nothing changes unless you change it. If you don't want the behavior to be repeated then you need to take action. Otherwise the kid has learned that his behavior is the way to get things done, because everyone lets him get away with it.
In the meantime I sympathize because I've been there.

I think not.

In all not a great episode. The whole "Saeed learns to be a torturer" thing was weak and unlikely.

h',

1) Sure, maybe, but... assuming that this island is really out in the middle of nowhere, do you think he would have made a mental note of which end of the island he crashed on? Particularly while he's crashing? It's not as if he was surveying the island, he ended up there by accident (by his own admission). And you're also assuming he had a compass or some other good way to know which direction was which. It just seemed strange to me, that's all.

2) petaQ!

3) Totally disagree -- thought this was a great episode-- a lot of nice little touches... Sayid as torturer was completely believable, after all he had done it already with Sawyer, remember?

Did you know that there are free LOST podcasts? Here is the link to the site that has the link to the podcasts. [www.lostcasts.com]

I just downloaded last weeks and I am about to listen. I can't wait to see if they have more info on the symbols in this weeks episode when it becomes available.

You don't need a compass to tell direction....
Sun rises in the east. Sets in the west.
While looking east (the sunrise), north is to your left.

3d, you're assuming that the sun sets in the west in this place.

It's already been mentioned that the island has strange electromagnetic properties (good luck using a compass, it doesn't work, but Locke claimed to have been able to have been able to figure out which way was which without it) ... my point is that, someone who is not native to the island might not have known this...

Guys, I think I may have found something...

The first symbol -- an "ss" sound, as in "glass"

The bird symbol -- probably an "a" sound, as in "water"

dunno about third and fifth symbols...

Look here: [members.aol.com]

... of course, this could also not be the right interpretation, but I'm suspicious that it is a simple code of some sort, e.g., it spells a word. Maybe this is like "Wheel of Fortune" ? winking smiley

3d, it can still be on Earth, but the appearance of the sun rising and setting could be an illusion or otherwise modified by atmospheric phenomena (diffracted light?). I know, it's a huge stretch, but on the other hand... I'm still wondering about the comment from last week's episode about radio signals bouncing off the atmosphere, and Hurley's comment... makes you wonder if there is ANYTHING normal about this island.

The direction of the sun rising and setting on the island is a consistent daily event. If it was NOT consistent. And the sun rises/sets in random directions, someone would've mentioned this by now. So, if the sun rises and sets in the same directions for everyone on the island, everyone on the island knows what directions East and West (and North, and South) are.

It gets to a point where you HAVE TO assume things or the whole premise of the tv show is ridiculous, even beyond science fiction and fantasy. And it just turns to garbage writing. For example, I'm assuming that Jack is human and not some alien in a jumpsuit.

They have, I believe (at least, indirectly) -- the fact that a compass doesn't point North. And how does the guy in the balloon then know which way is which? Is he using a compass, or the sun? (I'm assuming the latter, in which case if he didn't bring he a compass, he was pretty unprepared for his trip; or if he did, he must have noticed the same thing, that the compass is inconsistent with the sun.)

So, if the sun rises and sets in the same
> directions for everyone on the island, everyone on

You would think so. It's just that (if I recall correctly, someone else here I'm sure will point this out), if it were that simple, then why do they even need a compass? And why does Locke make a big deal of the fact that he no longer needs a compass to find his way around?

But how do you KNOW he isn't? winking smiley

Just kidding, I know what you mean. But they've already stretched things beyond certain levels of credibility, e.g., smoky black clouds which can haul somebody off into the jungle or toss them into a treetop.

Nope, not that I'm aware -- we haven't seen any specific date references on the island... again if I'm wrong with this, I'm sure someone here will correct me. I'm reminded of the hokey film Millennium (not to be confused with the great TV series of the same name), where plane passengers who disappear on crashed flights end up in the future. Not saying that that's what's happening here, but it is an interesting idea, that they may not be in the same time period as when they left.

PeterB, you evidently have not gone hiking in a while... Even on a bright sunny day. A hike in the woods with no compass is insane. You'll be walking aimlessly for half the time you are out there during midday. The other half of the time (early morning and late afternoon) you will have realized your mistake and trying to get back on track. You most defintely need a compass in dense jungle/forest unless you have a VERY good sense of direction and a keen eye on the sun.

This prisoner guy says he's been chillin' in the same cave for 4 months. In that time. I'm sure he's observed the sun. And the sun's relation to certain geographic landmarks around him. He would absolutely know if he's been living on the Northern coast of an island for all that time.

IMO the prisoner's comment about being on the Northen part of the island is a non-issue. It was Sayid's way of interogating the prisoner. Nit pick every little detail. Push buttons and see where it leads to.

the main army guy, besides being in Starship troopers (and a heck of a lot of other stuff!) was the main bad guy in the original Highlander movie.

HERE'S A HINT....
Hurley was dippin' into a tub of Ranch dressing.

Ranch dressing is an American salad dressing and vegetable dip made of sour cream, mayonnaise, and minced green onion, along with other seasonings. The original popular brand in the U.S. is called Hidden Valley Ranch Dressing. Hidden Valley Ranch was a lively guest ranch resort near Santa Barbara, California, and it was there that ranch dressing was invented in the late 1950s by the owner, Steve Henson, who had developed it in Alaska.

SOOOoooo... this all takes place sometime after the 1950's. Hope this helps! smiling smiley

I have been hiking, and yes, I do realize the value of a compass. So did Sayid, otherwise he wouldn't have tried to construct one. That's the whole point-- a compass doesn't work here. So if you have only the sun to go by, then you're going to be in trouble. That's why I found the guy's comment about being on the North part of the island a bit strange... either he's a very good navigator (possible, since we don't really know about him), or he got a very good look at the island before he crashed, or something.

If he had been out exploring, yes. I didn't get that impression-- sounded like he had been hiding in a cave for four months. (So yes, he'd know which way is north, which way south, etc., but how would he know he's on the north end of an island? Unless he's right at the North coast, as you say ... and I don't remember him saying exactly that, but maybe I missed it.)

No, that's part of why I found it strange. You see, he (the prisoner) volunteered that particular bit of information. Sayid did not say to him, "which part of the island were you on?"-- to which the obvious answer would be, "how the #&*$ should I know which part of the island I'm on!" (For that matter, I don't think it's ever been mentioned which part of the island either the main group or the tailies is on... south, east, west, whatever.) Rather, this guy just knew which part he was on.

Of course, I'm probably making too much of it, it's just that I (like Sayid) found myself scrutinizing this guy's story... it did seem a bit too cut and dry.

Oh and as far as the Ranch dressing ... yes, it has to have been MADE sometime 1950's or after, but that doesn't mean that where they are now is 1950's or after.

And there was music in the bunker which dated from the 1960's/1970's, so that does establish at least when the bunker was built (and the Dharma tape is dated 1980, and computer suggests late 1970's or 1980's) ... but again, that doesn't tell us what the CURRENT date is. Could be 2005, 3005, or 1005. winking smiley
