When did this come about? I think it takes place next month and the FOREVER stamps are being reissued at 42 cents! ! ! ! !

I don't remember hearing this new cost was coming about. Did you?

...FOREVER stamps are being reissued at 42 cents! ! ! ! !

No, they are not. They will be, eventually.

Which is in keeping with the concept as announced some time ago.

When the price of a First Class letter goes up again, the Forever stamp will match it.

The Forever stamps you bought at 41c are still valid, FOREVER, as postage equal to whatever the current First Class 1oz. letter postage.

Oh, and it goes into effect May 12.

I remember when an unsealed letter cost 1 1/2 cents! Seal it and it was 3 cents. We always sent our xmas cards unsealed except I think you could not sign your name. Had to be printed by a printer.

The rule wasn't that strict. You could sign your name, but no message was permitted.

The reduced rate was abolished in Jan. 1968 when the first class letter rate was increased to six cents.

"Gimmee 50 cents wuff" was a common request when I worked at a gas station in one of the economically challanged areas of Milwaukee back in the '50s. And I believe a first class letter stamp was 3 cents then too.

Oh, and BTW, I'm still addding 2 (now) 2 cent stamps to the 37 cent stamps I haven't used up since THAT was the FC letter rate. Thank you, Al Gore for the internet and email!

Oh yeah, paid 23,500 for a two family flat on Milwaukee's east side - My CRV set me back 26,000.

And in the 60s I owned a gas station where the price (with gas wars - remember them) was often below 25 cents a gallon.

And most if not all of you used to be 17, once upon a time.
Get over it! @#$%& happens and prices go up. They call it
capitalism. smileys with beer

You want to bit¢h about something how about the fact
that the Postal Service gives a cost break to all those
junk mailers and advertisers who in turn overload their
system causing them to need to increase rates in order
to keep up.

So, in effect the personal letter mailer/bill payer ends up
subsidizing the that annoying process.

Talk about a vicious circle.

And..I'm not "bitching". Prices are all relative for the times.

See I KNEW I made the right move last week when I used a regular .42 stamp instead of my last Forever stamp. I just made .01 which is a lot better than I'm doing in the stock market right now grinning smiley Ah, it's the little things in life.

Yeah, me too - Poolside East next to Sardino's on Farwell when I was in college - later moved to Prospect Towers. Long time ago. Remember George Pritchett - great jazz guitarist had a club on Humboldt. Girlfriend (vocalist) at the time used to sit in with him when we'd drop in.

But then, what DOES this have to do with 42 cent stamps?

My memory is as old as the 1 1/2 cent stamps! Penny postcards anyone? "you didn'thave computers when you grew up? or TV?"

"No, Virginia, we climbed trees and ate mayonaise sandwiches."

I really don't remember the 1.5 cents stamp but do remember that unsealed letters went for (I thought) postcard rate and I do remember penny postcards. "Just put your name and address on a penny postcard and send it to...." was frequently heard on the radio - yes, before TV.

Now we're back on subject.

well now I can remember at least having cucumbers

August meant no more liverwurst and bologna and if lucky maybe even some B in the BLT. :-)

I'm a lifelong musician. I knew George back then. Saw him staggering around the Eastside as tyhe sun was rising on a few occasions.

George was a player. Spent many hours in his clubs (trying to remember if the Humboldt dive was before or after the one on the south side - Oklahoma ave?) - remenber Baltimore Bordeax in his group? Baltimore used to sit with me and my former wfe on breaks when we'd go there, marvelling on how we still got along after we got divorced. George, meanwhile would be down in the basement getting ready for the next set.

Junk mail? I stuff all their s**t back into the prepaid return envelope and mail it back to them. When there is no prepaid return mailer, I hang on to the junk and stuff that into the next junk mail that has a prepaid mailer so it will add more weight and the jerk junk mailers have to pay more for the extra weight!

Hey everyone,

My technophobe of a dad is miffed enough about the increase that he's actually using online banking for paying bills! Now that's scary! Just the thought of online banking inspired a rant and now he's actually using it. Now I have to look forward to him ranting about online banking skewing a payment. Thanks USPS! Grrrr!

Guys like you want to bitch though, right?

There is a lot of grass roots effort to eliminate "junk mail". Wait 'till you see how much you have to pay with out those mailers subsidizing First Class.

I hope they raise it a penny every year. Really, when it takes nearly an act of Congress to get an increase to pay for overhead, and every two-three years at that, I don't mind.

Too bad gas didn't rise as fast as posage. I'd still be paying less than $2.00/gal.

I remember when my Apple II costs $4800 with 8kB (not MB or GB) or RAM, no monitor (just a TV), no floppy or HD (we loaded stuff from audio cassette tapes) and no modem. I bought a Hayes Micromodem 300bps for $300 in 1983.

Gee how much things have gone up since then.

Just think, if I had invested that $4800 in Walmart in 1977 instead of a computer that didn't much of anything, I'd have close to $5M today!
