Wow, this is sad...

Just got a PM at the other place, it's pretty old because apparently I'd been signed out, and it's from someone who is VERY obviously a newbie and has no clue where everybody is. I guess they got what they wanted: a forum full of mostly newbies, and a few diehards who for whatever reason have not visited here...

I'm confused. If they are a newbie, how can they be wondering what happened to all the people they wouldn't know about since they are new there?

Finally made it here... one comment though: this forum really needs a "go to topic" link. Everytime I want to continue down the list of topics after visiting a thread, I have to start from the top. Or am I missing something?

$tevie, that's my whole point. I didn't say that they were wondering what happened to all the people, since as you say, they wouldn't know about them since they are new there. Rather, what I said was that the person was obviously a newbie and had no clue were everyone was. These two are not the same thing... obviously if he's new there, he cannot know where everyone went, so it's a forum catch-22... any newbies to that forum will have no idea what it was like before they got there.

Okay, I give up. What does that mean: "had no clue where everyone was"? Do you mean he felt it was a sparsely populated forum compared to other forums? Do you mean he couldn't figure out how to click on Forum Summary and find the other categories? Do you mean he has lost his family and thought that dealmac was the place to look for them? I don't get it.

Ummm, I can't really get more specific without giving you the exact contents of the PM, which I'd rather not do. Suffice it to say that, among other things, he was making reference to a VERY old post of mine over there... and seemed to have enough of an idea that I might no longer be there much. (In fact, in the back of my mind, I was thinking, "is this some sort of setup? Could somebody really be this green?") I got the impression that this was a big time newbie (in every sense, not just in the DM sense) and probably did not know of the existence of this place.

If you read enough threads/posts, there are obscure references to "where everybody went", that "other place" , "googling jimmypoo", "if you don't like it here, stay over there", etc.

billb, exactly. So you'd either have to be pretty dense, be a pretty huge newbie, or be a devious person trying to snare someone not to know about it. I'm personally thinking it's the middle one, but either of the other two is possible too.

I think they did get what they want.

I suffer from the same sensitivity that you do. A few nuggets of wisdom were shared with me and I'm "trying" to incorporate them into my life. First, remember that nobody can hurt your feelings unless you let them. You can always reject what is being forced on you emotionally.
Second, nothing changes unless you change it. If you don't want the behavior to be repeated then you need to take action. Otherwise the kid has learned that his behavior is the way to get things done, because everyone lets him get away with it.
In the meantime I sympathize because I've been there.
