He is an idiot that thrives on sensational (cough) journalism (cough). He's been wrong every time he has opened his mouth regarding Apple.

Apple chose to make the iPod PC friendly because you can't expect to sell 30 million iPods if buyers are expected to install a card to use the device. Virtually all computers have USB. It doesn't take a journalism or economics degree to figure that out.

Sure. Apple is going to ditch a modern, powerful, virus free OS for Windows.

Someone should tell these guys the danger of smoking crack.

It must take a lot of time and effort for him to come up with progressively stupider and stupider analysts.

PCMag is laughing all the way to the bank with all the page hits, though. Like Lisa Simpson and Paul Anka said about the best way to deal with the rampant neon sign monsters, "Just don't look!" Just don't look!"

Microsoft has a product called Windows XPe. The "e" stands for "embedded". That is, they happily sell to OEMs who use the core Windows and who structure it for the OEM's own purposes. It no longer is a Microsoft product; it's not supported by Microsoft, and doesn't necessarily bear any resemblance to the off-the-shelf versions of Windows.

It can, in fact, be configured radically different from the consumer Windows.

Question: can the Macintosh look and feel be placed on top of Windows underpinnings? I don't know--but I'd bet that the conversation took place, at least at a conceptual level.

The issue of peripheral compatibility hits home every time I look at the beautiful HP1600cm Postscript printer a friend gave me when his office upgraded, and I know I can never run it in OSX. If I want to use it I have to reboot into 9 because that's where HP quit making mac drivers for it.

If Apple were to make a version of its software that could run as a shell around Windows, while making it more stable and less virus susceptible, would that be a bad thing? Apple could sell its software to a lot more people, and software margin has got to be higher than hardware.

The obvious solution to me seems to make the Intel Macs run Windows as well, thereby eliminating the peripheral driver issue. But then I've been wrong before, as when I thought the bowling ball base iMac would tip over too easily, not realizing how much deadweight was in that base. I've heard the new iMacs are much less stable, however, and a tipover can cost $700 to repair. For that reason I'm recommending minis to friends interested in macswitches. Is there any performance dif'?

For Postscript printing, you need nothing more than (a) a network connected Postscript printer, and (b) the PPD file for that printer.
