Another reason why I love Apple

I ordered a 2.16ghz refurb MBP this morning at 5:30.
I waffled all weekend whether to go the extra $200 for the 2.2ghz Santa Rosa MBP, but considering the usage I would give it (surfing the web, email, writing) I thought the $200 extra was better in my pocket.

After the Apple Store came back up I decided "what the heck, go for the extra $200". But when I tried to cancel my order 3.5 hours later I couldn't because it was "In Process". I called the online store and the rep said the best he could do was to send me a return sticker and I can return it without recurring a restocking charge, and order the 2.2ghz. Then he said "would it help if I took some money off the order - how about $75?" I countered with "how about $100" and he reduced the price to $1399. The heck with Santa Rosa and LED back-light.

Now, THAT'S customer service and the reason i LOVE Apple.

Sounds like an update for the MBP is coming soon. Oh, and great job at getting a bigger discount!

A positive experience is always the best. However, I would not equate a human-given discount as good "customer service" necessarily. A negotiation, some salesmanship, a desire to move out old product. A similar discount may not have been possible with a newer Mac --- would that mean "bad" customer service?

deckeda:

Maybe so, but I doubt if Dell or HP would have been as responsive.

A lot of times; all you have to do is ask.

I used to have pretty good luck going into Apple Stores and asking if they had any good deals on whatever I was looking for at the time. This could be an open box or demo model with full warranty.

Bought a couple iPods that way as well as my G5.

On my Dual G5; they called and left a message that they had a demo 2.0 model for $1399. Not a bad price considering at the time they were selling for at least $1900-2000 new. I told him I would buy it immediately for $1299. A short pause...the csr came back and said they could do that.

That was the quickest 120 mile drive I've ever made.

Never hurts to ask.
