A friend wants her house guests to be able to access the internet with their laptops through her home network without giving away her master password. As of now the network is wide open. TiA

Why not change the password on the router temporarily for the duration of their visit?

Usually, the method is to change the wireless key during their stay. You would still have the separate admin password to the router, so they could not do any harm to the router configuration. If you have not, you should set a router admin password (most come with it empty or the word "admin"). I would also set up the router to only accept wireless connections from specific MAC addresses.

Yes.

There are two Windows XP Home Ed desktops and a laptop. Her guests (many!) are mostly if not all are PC laptops users. I am the only Mac thus far. My friend is not a tech type; not even a novice. She has assigned that responsibility to the PC tech contractor ... he's her sole tech support specialist at this point.

BradDad,

Perhaps, the Mac addresses method is the way to go.

If the network is wide open, as you said in the original post---it is no problem. They will just connect--in the task bar of the windows machine there is a wireless icon>right click>view wireless networks>select the network>connect>confirm it is ok to connect to unsecured---that's it

Ken,

As a realtor she works from her home office often. As previously mentioned, she is not a tech type nor she cares to be so I am trying to give her painless of options to protect her network from wi-fi freeloaders and flightby hackers, or whathaveyou.
