iPhone on order - case recommendations?

Well, the SDK has interested me enough to buy an iPhone. I was planning on waiting until Apple came out with the 3G iPhone but I decided not to wait around while i could be making cool little apps for my iphone. $349 refurb - not bad.

Anyway - cases. Any recommendations? My primary concern is the screen which few cases appear to protect. I'm very happy with the Contour Showcase for my ipod but the equivalent for the iphone leave the screen unprotected.

Opinions? (i know you have a few of them)

I don't think you have to worry about the screen. They are near bullet proof. I haven't been able to even put a scratch in mine.

There are lot's of screen protectors. I would stay away from the softer plastic type since typing/sliding with your finger is smoother with the Mylar/hard type. Some are PET material.
I really like the Belkin Acrylic, but my favorite is the Capsule by SwitchEasy.com
Comes with screen protectors, head phone jack extended, and adapter for use in a universal iPod dock.

I've had the Case Mate since Day One. Absolutely love it. The leather feels great, looks professional, and it protects the iPhone well (I've dropped mine a couple times to know).
The other thing I love about it is that the pocket clip removable. I like to keep my phone in my pocket and a lot of cases don't have removable clips.

I bought mine at the ATT store when I bought the phone, but I'm sure you can get it for less online now.

I asked the same question here: [forums.macresource.com]

and got a lot of good responses, however I still haven't picked out a case. I looked at a bunch at the Apple Store and still couldn't decide.

I do like the case mate above. I might pull the trigger on that.

I've had my iPhone since June and it's been nude ever since.

For me, the problem with cases is that they add bulk to the slim iPhone. I'm not a fan of bulk. You can definitely see the wear on the metal back plate but the glass is smooth and clean - even after months of hard use and being dropped many, many times (one thing's fer sure, I don't baby my phone).

adapter for headphone jack on this model?

Amazon had a bunch of iPhones for sale last week...none today that I can find. Maybe they are going to betting some of the bigger Gigs in now. Hope so. I'm saving my Amazon coupons to buy an iphone but want the bigger one. Why I don't know...for the music capacity I guess.

What Bernie said. I have that case (not the Vaja although I love those) and it has protected my phone well. Ditto the commens on no need for a screen protector -- these are NOT like the old iPods that would get scratched when the wind blew. If you don't believe me, see the ars technica review on iPhone -- they TRIED to mar and destroy this phone a number of ways. Including putting it in a bag full of rocks/gravel and carrying it around. Scratched screen? No way!

I think they finally ended up blowing it up or throwing it at FULL FORCE so it skipped down the sidewalk. I think that finally did it in.

It would appear that Apple got some access to Area 51 technology for the screen and phone. You may not even need a case as Mac--a-Matic said...unless you're like me and like your stuff to be new looking all the time, ha.

Sam, you can get an adapter at your local AS for $10. A couple of brands are available, now probably several. Newer (OWC) probably sells one as well.

My wife has had her iPhone for about 6 months and I can safely say that the screen isn't likely to get scratched unless you work in a factory that manufactures garnet or diamond powder. It is susceptible to impact damage, but event the best screen protector that allows you to actually use the phone won't protect against that.

I put an invisible shield on my iPhone because the oil from my skin smudged the screen.

I have dry skin, but the iPhone screen just seemed to pick up any oil and smear it across the beautiful surface.

I don't use a case and my iPhone looks great after 7 months.

I've got the case-mate (since Day One also) and really like it.

It has an optional holster that allows you carry the phone while still in the case, with the belt clip on, if so desired. This is very handy if you need to carry the 'Phone on your belt instead of in a pocket.

The horizontal portion of the upper bezel is exposed and may be subject to some light scratching.

I've also got the Invisible Shield but have not put it on yet. You can't use the case-mate if you fully wrap the 'Phone, but I may just put it on the back and used a thinner shield for the front.

For what it's worth, the IS is not "crystal" clear. There is a slight texture to it, but otherwise is very clear, just not "crystal". However it's probably the most scratch resistant and protective of any shield. This is great for iPods, but maybe not so necessary for 'Phones and Touches (except maybe for the back and sides of the latter).

static-cling screen protector, naked otherwise.

Wouldn't keep it any other way.

I went through a similar process, and had a similar set of parameters. I also wanted a case that offered face cover. (I use the phone nude sometimes, too, but it's like a slippery bar of soap, not easy to hang on to) I also found that I'm inclined toward leather, two of the three cases I own are soft black leather. I finally settled on the Sena Flip case, fancy Italian leather, cost a little more, but very well made (not all of them are) Of the several cases I've purchased (and still switch around occasionally) it's the one I use and enjoy the most. I especially like that the case cover flips down, naturally, with gravity, instead of up and over the top, or sideways. The drop-down design is part of what makes it feel good to use.
