OT: Have you had the chicken stuff injected in your knees?

I can't remember what the medical name is...but have heard varying opinions of this treatment for creaky knees.

If you have had the injections...did it work for you?

Chicken stuff injected in knees?

This must be along the same lines as rich and stupid hollywood folks buying "Colon De-Toxifying Kits" or "Ear Cleaning Candles"...

It don't sound "right"...

It could be some substance derived from chickens (where does glucosamine come from?), but I don't know what it would be. A search for chickens and knees doesn't come up with anything, that isn't funny, at least. kj.

This, perhaps?

Synvisc
Synvisc is an elastic and viscous fluid that is made up of hylan A and hylan B biological polymers. The two hylans are manufactured from hyaluronan that comes from chicken combs.

Whatever it is made of, a woman in my office is considering having it done because her friend swears by it. I don't know anything more than that since my co-worker was rather vague about the details.

synthetic cortisone is made from soybeans ifirc.

steroids are "juicers" so I'm wagering chicken juice is slang.

the only people I know who got cortisone shots yield just temporary solutions, however, supposedly somehow the loss of pain helps with healing. Don't ask me about athritis, I don't even want to think about it.

I think this is not cortisone, it is some kind of fat or collagen or whatever, anyhow that is how it was semi-explained to me.

contraindication of allergy of avian proteins sounds like that might be it.

I won't have to rush home to watch jeopardy or vanna white now. :-)

I think that is the stuff that is in question here. I seem to recall my mom having it done years ago and think she mentioned it was made of rooster combs or whatever. I think it was a very temporary "fix". She has since had to have knee replacement surgery.

Sorry, i don't know any specifics behind it.

It is artificial synovial fluid . I had it done about 6 months ago as has my wife. There are at least 2 protocols available one with 3 injections and one with 5. If it lasts a year you can have it redone. I got a small improvement (gradually getting better). My wife has had a dramatic improvement.

Synvisc and there is another brand also I learned last night at a Drs lecture on the subject. I don't think I'm a candidate, however, because I don't think I have any cartilage lin my left knee!

Shark product in glucosamine. There is no proof it helps in blind tests conducted but it doesn't hurt you.

There were some promising animal studies, but the human studies have been equivocal. I think it may have helped my dog, but it screws up my stomatch. kj.

The technical name is Hyaluronic acid. It is along chain polymer that is abundant in most of our tissues when we are young (joints, skin, eyes, etc). It has a unique ability to 'collect' something like 10x its own weight in water, and acts as a natural lubricant and moisturizer.

It's use has been growing lately for joint injuries and cosmetics. There is also some work being done for other wound treatment. There are some oral-based therapies, but I doubt the efficacy, since the HA will most likely be degraded in the stomach. Injection or epidermal is most effective. The traditional source was from rooster combs, but due to the issue of animal sourcing, there have been a few companies working on alternative sources. One of these is produced by bacteria. This removes the use of any animal material, and can actually be a cheaper source.

I know all of this because I used to work for the company that recently commercialized the bacterial source.
