A few days ago I realized that the way I had been using my T-Mobile account, I would actually save money in the long run if I switched to an iPhone and AT&T. So, I jumped in and got one yesterday. I love it. I'm going to start writing apps for it, and when we can finally put them on the phone itself (June?), I'll be ready to go.
First impressions follow...(and apologies to those who already know all this)
The good:
- Beautiful screen, fantastic to read
- Safari is outstanding, and it renders pages really well. It's way closer to browsing on a regular computer than I'd ever imagined.
- The landscape mode is great for reading many web pages
- The zoom function is awesome for web pages (although I wish you could zoom just a bit more in some cases)
- WebApps are better than I thought they'd be. I found a great scientific calculator that fits my needs perfectly.
- The quasi-GPS location isn't too bad, although at one point it put me in the "general vicinity" of the entire city of Boston. Normally, it seems to get to within a block or so.
- I'm getting used to the keyboard, and it is pretty easy to use.
- It's a great iPod!
The not so good:
- Not being able to sync wirelessly is a bummer
- I'm already pissed at AT&T for their $39 connection fee. Bastards.
- What's with the lack of copy/paste functionality? Crazy. You can't select any text, anywhere.
- No modem for my MacBook. I'm considering jailbreaking the phone solely for that function alone (well, and for a VNC client, and an eBook reader...)
- Bluetooth is severely crippled (I miss being able to send SMS messages through my phone via address book)
- I wish the landscape/flip worked in more apps (Not even in Mail!)
- No to-do list. Come on, Apple!
Overall, I love it, and I'm crossing my fingers that things will get much better in a couple of revisions and when user-apps are officially allowed.
