The fate of 38910 Folding team, hang on for now
Posted by: pRON aHOLIC
Date: December 15, 2005 04:27PM
First of all, the folding team is Mac Max's and not mine or Dealmac's.

I discussed the situation with Max and many folders on the team and are still waiting on some replies.

As it stands, no one has indicated opposition to a team name switch. There are several reasons this makes sense. 1. The team was created as a community effort for a good cause, it does not have any control by Dealmac admins. It was done as a grassroots effort to get the DM name out there. 2. I do not know of any dealmac machines currently folding for that team. 3. Since it is community based and the majority of the team is here at Macresource then it is still the community's 4. A change in team number would cause many to have to change upwards of dozens of computers.

Max and I will talk again tonight and if the last few people agree to change the name we will change it to something more suitable tonight.

Thanks for helping such a good cause everyone.

Team DealMac (38910) does not belong to DealMac.com, but to Mac Max. I did not know that. Thanks for filling me in pRon.

A lot of us found the DealMac forum and decided to join the folding team because we enjoyed the sense of community the forum provided and because other forum members helped to educate us on why folding is important.

I think it would be great to keep team 38910. Of course, a name change is in order due to the community relocation. The question is, what do we call it?

Keep us advised.

John

How about MacstotheMax?

Did I mention that I am terrible at naming things?

Why don't you give this "folding" thing a rest?

Is this a thing for grown people to be doing?

Maybe you should apply yourself to more pressing matters like I do, such as stalking mentally ill paranoids on forums.

rgG;

There's always room for more folders on the Team!

Grab a copy of InCrease, and you'll be folding protein-units before you know it! (literally, since it folds in the background with no finder-level visible application).

What are the minimum specs for folding. I think I read that you really can't fold on a laptop. Also, does the machine have to be always connected to the internet. I might have a machine or two that could be pressed into service if I knew a bit more about how it works.

Someone can PM me with the details of the above if you don't want to post it here. Might be a thread hi-jack, or not.

rgG, you have a point. I stopped folding because my iBook was overheating. I had it propped up on a couple of paperback books, but it still overheated. Any ideas, anyone? I would be happy to fold but I am not willing to wreck my machine.

I have an old Blueberry iMac that isn't busy, but it isn't, at present, connected to the internet. And, it's stock, no upgrades, so I don't know how good it would be. I could probably let it run in the background on my husband's eMac, as long as it wouldn't confuse him. He fears change.

InCrease is your friend there. It can configure the Folding@Home client to automatically start up when the machine is booted. Folding will run in the background and only use idle CPU time.

Yeah, what Tominator said..

InCrease is a neat third party Folding client that installs the gooey unix innards of Folding at Home so that it runs without you even seeing it or knowing it's there unless you really want to. (a bit oversimplified, I know, but a good approximation of the truth).

There's no reason that a laptop CAN'T do folding, but it won't fold when asleep, and folding will keep the CPU running (and generating heat).

Put it on that eMac using InCrease, and when your husband stops doing stuff, InCrease will do some folding until he starts again. No interaction needed... it just sits, waiting for "free" time and doing it's thing.

We might have been a tad premature starting the new folding team - this is a community event/process and we are golden to go for whatever works best.

FWIW - now we are ready as we have the folding getting dispersed about our network for the first time. smiling smiley

rgG, I fold with an iBook G3 600, just fine. I have it set up on a few wooden blocks in a mostly unheated room and it just chugs away-- slowly but surely. I did set it up not to sleep but also to operate at a lower capacity rather than full-out.
