OT: what do you use to remove grease gunk from cook surfaces/utensils?

So I have a couple of pots and pans with a grease/gunk buildup which is pretty near impossible to remove with even a good scrubbing in hot soapy water. It's more annoying than anything, but I'd like to see if I can remove it if possible.

Does anyone have any suggested remedies to this problem, or are there any products out there that I could use, but would still be safe to use on surfaces that I will eventually use to prepare food?

thanks!

I use Greased Lightning. Let it soak a while (an hour) and then come back and scrub.

Any degreaser will work well on pots and stuff. I've got problems with grease on my wood cabinets that I'm having a hell of a time cleaning off.

I like Dawn Power Dissolver for this kind of thing.

We bought that stuff...I think its the same stuff as Greased Lightning...worked just as good.

The GL will work on the wood too...great stuff.

If the pots are oven safe, you could try putting them in the oven and set it for self clean. I did this with one of my wife's cast grill pans (not a cast iron one, it has a porcelain coating on the outside and has a non-stick coating inside). Worked great and just needed a quick wash with a sponge and it was like new.

ammonia and a pot of hot water from the coffee maker.

You probably do not want to try the self-clean cycle in the oven with anything other than cast iron because most pots aren't oven safe past 450 degrees.

If your pans are nonstick, try the degreaser. If they are stainless steel, use Barkeepers Friend.

What are they made from?

If steel then lots of baking soda, a little bit of water and a Scotch Brite scouring pad should do the job.

If tin or aluminum then soak in a commercial degreaser for an hour and scrub it with an abrasive soap pad (I like Scotch Brite never-rust pads because they don't scratch as much as Brillo). Heck, if they're tin you could use soft scrub and end up polishing out the existing scratches.

If iron then use a fine-grit sand paper and once it's clean, coat it in oil and season it again over a gas flame.

If copper add a half-cup of washing soda and a tablespoon of salt to three quarts of water and bring to a boil on the stove, then empty it out and gently rub at the stains with a soft towel and a bit of vinegar. Polish it when you're done.

Spray on oven cleaner-ie:EZ Off-spray it on--and the put in a closed-cold oven (to keep the fumes in check)
