If you get a hose reel, not the hidey kind, get a metal one. The plastic ones are too flimsy and will break or freeze and burst.

I got the hidey plastic one like in the pic above...it makes rolling up the hose a helluva lot neater and faster.

I have two of them and like them pretty well. If you use cheap vinyl hose it will collapse and restrict water flow. If you buy one, you might consider getting the kind that works like a fishing reel to distribute the hose on the reel.

Got a plastic one from Sears, it lasted a couple months. Plastic is not strong enough for the job.

Where do you get a metal one?

I have one, not from that manufacturer who product is shown above, but another one and it works very well. The gearing that controls the hose distribution is solid and works evenly, I've had three hoses in the thing. Two hoses work the best, as three get a bit unwiedly. Plastic does not necessarily equate cheap, ours uses a very durable high-strenght plastic, we've had the reel for about 4 years now.

The neighbor has what looks to be that exact one. It works well.

I bouyght one like the one you have in the pic. I hated it, but it was cheap. I took it back and got a better one by Ames. I am now very happy with how my hose collects

I have the exact one. It's been sitting outside my house, full of cheap hose, for four years now. I empty the hose out before winter sets in (NE Ohio, 10 below with wind chill last night), and disconnect it from the faucet (which is a freezeproof sillcock design).

It is important to note:

You cannot expect a plastic reel to survive having to pull 50 pounds of full hose with a sprinkler attached to it through thick grass and weeds. It will cave on you. Hence the complaints above. I use quick-connects (brass) on the hose and the attachments. Turn off the hose, go to the end, unplug it, reel the hose in. It empties itself as it goes. Sometimes I have to pull the hose in with me.

With a metal reel, you just put a long handle on it and crank away. If you don't want to walk back and forth to unplug stuff, get a metal reel.
