What do you do when you can't get a song out of your head?
Posted by: PeterB
Date: February 20, 2006 09:47AM
I'm sure other people here have had this problem, but it's starting to drive me nuts.

I remember reading somewhere that neuroscientists have figured out why this happens -- it's apparently because when you've listened to a song (or even remembered one), the song or its melody bounces back and forth between your hemispheres via the corpus collosum-- this is the section of the brain that connects the hemispheres (and which, when severed, leads to the famous cases for which Sperry won the Nobel-- see here: [en.wikipedia.org]). In my particular case, I've been told that I likely have an overdeveloped CC, because I am median-brain dominant (rather than left brain dominant, as are the majority of the population)... so I'm suspicious in my case that when the song gets in there, it may take an extra-long time to come out...

just start singing another one over and over

The Taoist Zhuangzi said, "Good order results spontaneously when things are let alone".
The sociologist, and historian, Adam Ferguson described the phenomenon of spontaneous order in society as the "result of human action, but not the execution of any human design".

I have had "Atlantic City" running in my head for a week and cannot decide between The Band or Bruce. Leaning to The Band. "Got debts no honest man can pay."

Get a DeWalt 12V Drill with a 1/2" bit. Bore 1" into your frontal lobe. Works every time.

I have an anti-song song that I've discovered works every time.

For me, it's the theme music to Picket Fences. Knocks the other one right out, but doesn't hang around itself.

Listen to Muskrat Love or Afternoon Delight. That should put the song you're hearing in you head on hold for a while.

Uhhh, guys, you really don't want to replace one song with another... that doesn't really solve the problem, eh? And no, it could be worse, if I have a really BAD song stuck in my head!

I'm amazed that so far nobody has asked me which song it is!

elmo, I may kick myself for asking, but... I don't remember the Picket Fences theme song (I didn't watch that show much)... linky?

Hint #1: think 1976 (ugh).

Hint #2: think arena rock.

Hint #3: think piano/keyboard (at least, this is a catchy part of it).

Nope

Hint #4: The band is named for where they're from. (That narrows it tremendously!)

Hint #5: The song itself has a lot of overdubbing, and was featured on a soundtrack for a fairly recent movie starring a comedian (it being on the soundtrack, was relevant to the time when the song was originally released).

Boy, that should pretty much give it away...

Oh, and once you guys guess it and start listening to it, then all of YOU will have it stuck in your heads, and I will have had my revenge! winking smiley

Getting warm!

Hint #6: This song was one of the band's biggest hits

Hint #7: The song makes allusion both to Christian and Greek mythologies

Sing it out loud as if you were Bob Dylan. The later Bob Dylan, not the "Bringin' It All Back Home" Bob Dylan.

$tevie, doesn't help in this case. "Wayward Son" is one of those songs that will turn any guy into a bonafide Wannabe Rock Godâ„¢ -- watch out for your boyfriend/husband if he listens to it...

You've got it easy. My stuck song was Henry The Eighth I am I am. Second verse same as the first. The horror, the horror.

There's nothing you can do except maybe try to stay busy doing something that occupies your brain. Or you could eat ice cream until you have a nose freeze and that will pause it.

Here's a general-purpose technique that may help.

Whenever you have a recurring problem that intrudes onto you, set aside fifteen minutes a day for it. Faithfully sit down for that time and give yourself entirely over to it.

Then, when the timer goes off, get up and say, "OK, that's all for today. See you at this time tomorrow."

Then, whenever the tune, problem, creative idea, etc., comes intruding on other necessary things in life, say to it, "Sorry, not now, but I'll see you tomorrow at..." Then keep the appointment.

This method, adapted from "A Writer's Time" by Kenneth Atchity, is valuable for keeping your creative unconscious from taking over your life. Honor it, but train it.

I hope this helps.
