crazy illusion. this one has me flummoxed

opened it up in photoshop, and it works. seems like it shouldn't....

guess that's why it's called an illusion

Wow ! That IS impressive. I was able to get it optically close only by occluding the rest of the image with my hands. Yep- the brain sees pictures, not pixels.

For those who don't have Photoshop, there is a app in your utilities folder called Digital Color Meter that you can use to take measurements by just moving the cursor over the squares on the web page.

Actually, if you just use cmd-opt-4 and just capture as close as you can to the two squares in question, you can see it. It's still pretty amazing.

The artist Josef Albers did a series of paintings where he made colors look different by their surrounding colors. We had to do this as an assignment in art school with Pantone papers.
The results could be quite amazing.

I use that when I teach staffers to learn to trust the info box in Photoshop - not what they see on their monitors.

That's what I was going to say... The two boxes above look different because they are surrounded by light colors on the top square, and dark boxes on the lower square. It is a great optical illusion.
