What's plugged in to the ribbon that sits over the hard drive?

Are those the power and data lines? Plugging into the drive cable?

IR sensor and sleep light/latch. I assume you mean the wires at the front that plug in.

Have you tried to upgrade the processor?

Dude! My local AS doesn't even have one of these yet for me to check out and you've already ripped yours apart? That's just wrong -- wrong, wrong, wrong.

Right-right-right! :>) Processors are soldered on with the laptops; and considering Apple charges more for the RAM in the laotops than they do in the iMacs (check it out yourself!)

I got mine this morning. But I only took enough of it apart to install the OWC ram I had waiting for it. I spent most of the day getting my files and apps on it so I haven't checked out too much. But Safari is a speed demon, Bridge (PS) sure moved faster, and Sims2 ran much better than on my 1ghz Ti.

What an eleganly constructed machine.

I don't think I've ever seen a laptop quite like that one.

I have...with the original 17" PowerBook.

You should also white out some information...or not. Whatever. : )

OK - so the CPU is indeed soldered on the logic board - I was sitting on the fence trying to decide whether to order the 1.83Ghz and try an upgrade later (when the price of the 2.16Ghz chips comes down to $60 or so in a year... maybe they'll have 2.5Ghzfor $200 then...)

But if the chip's soldered on, then clearly only a send-away 3rd party upgrader with a nice hardware desoldering unit (like the current Ti G4 upgrades) is going to be able to do that work. Still, for the $600 I could save to have a MacBook Pro now, that might be worth it when the day comes (and the warranty expires).
