Remember when gas was only $3.50?

From AP this AM:
"Oil prices spiked to a record $117.40 a barrel after a Japanese oil tanker was hit by a rocket near Yemen and militants in Nigeria claimed two attacks on pipelines."
Just thinking about last week's thread. We'll be misty-eyed when we remember when gas was "only" $3.50 per gallon.

I remember buying gasoline for 25 cents a gallon in the mid-1950s.

Cheap gas took us a long way, some of it in the wrong direction.

Last night we had a "I remember when" conversation about gas. Mine was 58 cents. My wife's was 78 cents. I remember when the gas stations had to tape up the 1 on their signs when prices went above $1.

The gas station right next to work has it at $3.95 this morning. I paid 3.55 when I filled up near home last night.

I leased a Standard Oil station across the street from my Corvette Shop in the mid 60s and price wars had me selling at 23.9 cents many times in the couple years I ran it (I sold the gas station business when I got called up for the Vietnam conflict). Those prices were supported by Standard Oil (and all the other gasoline suppliers - we still got our 4 cents a gallon profit (of which Stabndard Oil took 2.5 cents per for rent. We had to buy our parts (that they sold) from them as part of the lease agreement. (memory may be foggy as to EXACTLY what the rent per gallon was, but I'm close anyway) All in all it was a good deal as I sent all the non-Corvette customers across the street and didn't have to sully my parking lot with Fords and Chrysler products or - horrors - Japanese cars. We did do a good business putting clutches in VWs and Corvairs though.

I am old enough to remember the "gas wars" of the 60's. We bought gas at 17¢ per gallon. We would argue over who would cough up the dollar for the night's cruising.
Well, it is now time to get serious about our consumption and how to deal with it. I know our European cousins feel we're just getting our come-uppance but they are also paying that much more, too.
And again, when I see an Escalade flying by me on the freeway at 85, I better not hear that driver bitching.

A 57 Chevrolet convertible that I drove in the late 50s got 28 mpg on multiple trips to California from Miwaukee WI. For those trips I put a 3.03 (Powerglide ratio) rear end in and a standard Chevy 3 speed overdrive trans. Once back in the city I ran a 4:11 rear with a close ratio BW 4 speed. Many drag racing trophies still in the attic from that car - Union Grove WI for you Midwesterners who might remember the times.

I remember 24 cents a gallon. We would put $2 worth of gas in my friend's Ford Falcon and drive from The Bronx all the way to Coney Island, in Brooklyn, ride the Cyclone roller coaster, eat lobster rolls at Nathan's and then drive all the way back to The Bronx - all on that $2 worth of gas.
Now, I'm lucky if that $2 will get me out of the driveway.

Somewhere at home, I have a receipt for gas at $.89/gal. I remember thinking at that time that it would be the last time in my life that gas would be that cheap. It was.

There's always somebody espousing how wonderful Europe is compared to the US...
Well... get used to European fuel prices... We still have a couple dollars to go to catch up with that average.

Ain't it wonderful?

Whodda thunk it.

I remember when gas was around 15c a gallon.. That was pre-Gas War, and Full Service, with two attendants checking the car.

Not quite Back to the Future service, but nobody pumped their own gas.

Well, I remember rationing and my dad buying 5 gallons at a time. That was a habit he never dropped. When he retired, and spent nearly every day at my shop helping out, he'd still stop and get 5 gallons even though he was using my company credit card and driving a company car.

But you live in NY. You make up for it elsewhere...

Most people that don't own cars don't claim ignorance of gas prices.
Maybe those that can't read ?

I guess I could qualify that. Do you live in or near NYC? Rent? Cost of food? City tax?
If not not then I humbly beg your pardon.
However, here in Michigan, our state tax is six percent. NYC is ten percent, yes? And, believe me, you can buy a very nice home for very cheap here!

Haven't paid it yet, but probably will next fill-up. The two low price stations in town( Western Mass.) reached $3.479 and $3.499 today before I drove past them. Will need to do the fill-up soon, have to go pick up my son from school near Boston Wednesday.

Gas prices here went up $.35/gal yesterday to $3.70. The day before, AAA's gas survey showed this metro area as the cheapest in the state (Michigan). The oil companies sure put a stop to that quickly.

At $3.70, in my opinion, gas is now $2.00/gal higher than it should be.

On the other hand, I do think we should be conserving and finding better sources of energy, and if gas was still $1.69 we never would.
