Powermac Problems, Chassis Fan: Out of warranty and seeking advice.
Posted by: microchip13

So, I've had this problem before in September. My Chassis fan(The one in the drive bay, the blower fan) has gone bad. It's kinda 'searching' exactly like the old one was.

Now, when I got it replaced last time, they replaced the whole chassis. This is the hardest to get to fan.

So. I don't exactly have $900+ to burn on a new chassis and I don't know if I should attempt to McGyver it. It's extremely annoying though.

Advice?

Just because it has two clutches, shifts faster, uses a torque converter or has near-infinite gear ratios, requires less driver intervention and is more efficient doesn't make it better in my opinion.

As said, the fan is the Chassis. From what Apple has told me, there is no seperate part number for the fan, they are one of the same. I haven't torn it apart to take a look much further though.

It's a Powermac 7,2.
Dual 1.8, if I recall this is the original dual 1.8.

It would probably help if you mentioned that it was a G5.

I have a spare, if you need it. (cost of shipping)

I had a fan with a terrible squawking, I applied a drop of "Slick 1 Lube" to the shaft with a toothpick and it has been noiseless for years. Might be worth a try?

Dual 1.8... so it's a G5?
Are you talking about the fan on the power supply? Is it below the metal plate on the bottom...?

This one?

Sorry, I forgot about the G3s and G4's.

"Powermac" goes all the way back to the 601 processor, dude.

do you mean the fans that are part of the power supply?

[cgi.ebay.com]
this might be the part number you want to search for 661-2904
[cgi.ebay.com]
or maybe 661-2903

does your repair bill show the part number they replaced?

Although he wasn't perfectly clear on what system and such, he did say:

The one in the drive bay, the blower fan

This is the top fan assembly, the media bay cooler.

Maybe your closest Apple store will try to calibrate your fans as a goodwill gesture and to rule out hardware failure?

Have you tried disconnecting the drive bay temp sensor to see if that gets rid of the searching?

Sorry, I forgot about the G3s and G4's.

604, 603 and 601s were PMs too.

And to further relive confusion: [ninjaproduction.com]

Took that when I tried to resell the fan on ebay. Never sold, they very rarely go bad. Compared to the likelihood of the case to get crushed in shipping, or for the logic board/processors to fail, the fans almost never fail.

Yeah. I just picked up on the "This is the hardest to get to fan."

Oops.

'Not sure which fan you're talking about... the speaker/fan assembly?

The one Grim has a picture of is the one I'm talking about.

FWIW, one of the fans in my G5 dual 2.0 like to make some noise if I start it up from a cold night, but after a few minutes the case gets nice and warm and it returns to normal.

Before you do anything rash in the way of surgery, you might want to run the hardware test off of your install DVD (insert original installer disc, restart, hold down "D" key on your keyboard) to see if it detects a bad temperature sensor.

If you want it, they will have it. You may not like the price, but if you want a new one, there it is. Just know the specs on the fan.
