My thoughts on Psystar

Everyone seems to want to compare it with the Mini.

$399 vs $599 and yes it has a faster CPU, bigger drive and memory.

Add $155 for Leopard and $50 for FireWire and it becomes $604. I NEED both.

Now add $79 for iLife and $19 for remote and it becomes $702. Leopard and iLife makes a computer a Mac and not just hardware with any old software. I use iLife daily but rarely use the remote.

Who is going to support the computer and the OS???? Or will buyers join the-----Microsoft - PC maker - You must have a virus----vicious circle.

Still missing from Psystar is built-in Bluetooth and WiFi. I use both for internet and to sync my phone.

I chose a MacBook instead of the Mini but is very similar equipped. Also we all know not to buy Apple ram. Hard drive is probably a 3.5 inch so it will be bigger for less money.

So in MY opinion there isn't much of a savings for me to even consider this computer. I bought what I needed. Let others buy what they think is best for them. Now this company will probably outlast Apple. Everybody knows Apple is doomed. Even more in dire straits now that they have a monopoly on Leopard.

Biggest difference is that Apple products exist, and Psystar doesn't exist.

But it sure is fun reading the feedback on this story at ZD. So many complaining that Apple has a monopoly with Leopard. If Apple is so bad and OS X sucks so much, why all the rants. Could it be they realize that Vista isn't all that is should be after all the waiting.

I'm doing some video conversions right now, would be great to have a stable box running OSX and handbrake. That machine would not need anything except firewire plus standard hardware and it would blow away my mactel iMac (revA). Being able to add 4 1T hard drives would be great.

And it would free up the iMac for other things.

My read is the company has found a market, might even be legal, and now has $$ backing them.

According to their website they are shipping boxes now. I would be interested to know how easy it would be to install your own copy of Leopard.

It is a Hackintosh.

There are several sites on how to build one, what mobo's to use, where to download the patches.

But in the end I could build a Hackintosh with a Quad core and memory and other possible expansions for the same price I picked up a mini.

But did I really need Quad CPUs, when Dual core is more than enough? Did I need 8GB of RAM, when 3.3GB is more than I really use? And the audio out didn't quite work, and there was a snafu with the Ethernet card. And the sword of Damacles everytime you wanted to run Software update.

If you need a 4 or 8 core machine or need more than 1 24" monitor and don't want to pay MacPro prices, go build a Hackintosh. Otherwise get a mini and enjoy the time you save screwing around with it.

Just wait until buyers run OS update for the first time and it won't boot into OS X. Hackintosh's aren't for the casual computer user.

The magazines have places more significant pieces of vaporware on their covers, being the idiots they are.

I would venture to say this was the phishing scam that it was originally thought to be, OR was trying to get pre-order funds to justify its existence.

They've changed their address three times in the course of people trying to interview them.

I say they don't *really* exist and that it's a hoax perpetrated by Insider and mick e.
