Brand new cell phone question!!!
Posted by: h'
Date: February 22, 2006 09:54PM
So Cingular is finally making me an offer on a GSM plan that is not a step down from my current TDMA plan.

Need to choose a phone, opinions welcome.

My choices are here:
[onlinestorez.cingular.com]

I want something with a speakerphone that can ride around in my pocket without falling to pieces-- I'm not too excited about a flip phone due to the potential for the antenna to break off, plus it's hard to use with one hand.

The Nokia 6102 seems to be the clear winner . . . any opinions on that one?

Thanks (let me know if that link works)

Nokia, regardless--rugged, great battery life, easy to unlock, and so on.

phonescoop.com is your friend.

I have the 3120. Nice little bar phone.

I like my Sony Ericsson z520a. Works great with iSync.

It is a flip phone, but the antenna is not a nub like most flippers.

But it sucks for one-handed use. problem solve with a Bluetooth headset, tho.

I don't like my motorola v551. It have very unintuitive menus. At least compared to a LG phone (I switched from Verizon. I am sort of regretting it right now)

Thanks, folks.

I know the 6102 is a flip phone.
Will never ever do "hands-free"-- I want to hurt people who use them very badly because 90% of the time you can't understand a thing they say. Plus they look like big giant dorks.

Will not touch anything that's touched anything that says "Sony".

I'm wary of making any inferences about the quality of an item based upon the brand because these things get farmed out and repackaged so often (except for Sony-- I'll infer all I want about that cr@p :-).

I was happy with my Nokia 6560 until it crashed and the screen flipped and some of the buttons stopped working.

Had a motorola flip, reception was horrid even before the antenna broke off, user interface was horrible, messaging next to impossible.
Moto is on the "no" list along with Sony, even though I think they're made here in Chicago.

Um-- could it really be that these folks give you NO voice mail unless you opt for it, at $1.99 a month?

I've been happy with Samsung flip phones.

I looked at Cingular years ago and wasn't happy with the things they don't give you without paying extra-and it's not nickels and dimes--it's dollars, and quite a few of them. So, I went to TMobile and haven't looked back.

You get voicemail for free. I think you can get "Enhanced" VM for an extra charge. WTF is enhanced about it, I don't know.

Looks like you're narrowing the list down pretty good on your own.

Thanks, I was hoping the "enhanced" thing meant that you get "non-enhanced" voice mail with the regular service.
I could just see someone getting a message that says "mailbox unavailable-- the congular customer you are trying to reach is not willing to pay $2 for it".

The reason for my comment about the 6102 being a flip phone, I thought maybe you had some numbers mixed up. There are some Nokia stick phones with numbers sorta like that. I wasn't trying to be smart.

Sorry, I didn't think you were trying to be a smartie, I just thought you were suggesting I'd started this thread without doing anything at all on my own. And for that I must punish you severely :-) Seriously, I can see how I was confusing, and thanks for trying . . .
