Home Improvement question: Holes in the wall

Because the screw came loose the towel ring fell off our master's bathroom's plaster wall. Should we cover the two existing holes with some type of patching compound then drill another hole to hang the ring? Are other options besides creating another hole? TiA.

2nd the Molly bolt - I updated all my hardware with molly bolts the past few months. The previous owner has stuff fastened to the walls various ways.

We are slowly discovering many shoddy home improvement done by previous owners just for the sale of the house at the time the market was on the upswing.
