Exporting files to external HD

I have been working on freeing up space on my internal HD.
If I copy my games to external drive will I be able to play them from there?
Is there anything crucial I should know about copying files to external hard drives?

Usually it works best to place your documents on a separate drive while leaving the applications on the main drive.

With some games you can move the application anywhere you want, but there will still be other associated files that reside on the main drive regardless.
