Should I get New Credit Cards
Posted by: Stavs

I have a few credit cards and I just read a story about some fraudulent charges. I was thinking of calling my CC company (all mine are through Capital One) and requesting new cards with new numbers. Would this be beneficial?

Having your CC used fraudulently sucks, but you are protected from this use. Unless you suspect that the numbers have been compromised, what's the point?

They should send you new cards every few years anyway.

I have my card # memorized. Makes online purchases easy. Except when they want the damned 1-800 number on the card (I think Newegg does that).

I got a letter from my Credit Union last month stating that my CC # possibly was compromised as some vendor on line had his server hacked. I monitored my account daily on line and did not detect any unusual activity, but they shut down my account and issued a new card anyway. The only time I have had problems is when I let my card out of sight at a out of town gas station. Twice, in my life time, I have had some teenager try to fill up his gas tank using my numbers. I make it a rule never to let my card out of sight at gas stations and restaurants.

You are protected against fraudulent charges - but it is a MAJOR pain in the rear when someone gets your card in use for fraud.

a couple years ago - was getting gas and my card came up with a call in. Went inside and said needed to call. The cashier was a bit annoyed, suggested I must be over limit and suggested I get another card out. I insisted the card was fine - they called it in and put me on only to tell me that it was on hold to see if I'd been to Brazil lately. So ended up having to use a different card as no - I wasn't using the card in Brazil.

It's annoying and embarrassing since can cause your card to not accept charges at any number of inopportune moments.

that said - have had no problems with any other cards in the last couple years. Swapping out your current cards for new ones isn't likely to reduce the cc fraud risk by too much since usually it's a recent hit that will get the fraudster going. The fresher the lifted card info, the more likely it's good to go.

That's my opinion in terms of the attempted fraud trends we see.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

It's a good idea to make sure that the mailbox your bills are sent to is secure, and also shred anything you throw in the trash that has your numbers on it. Also shred credit card offers.

I would suggest getting the new ones, but send the old ones my way first, so that we can test their "Fraud Protection" plan.

I just bought a Haz Mat suit, so getting funds out of the ATM shouldn't be a problem.

You get the info you need, and I get what I need. If there was ever a win/win, this is it.

So THAT's where the charges from MidgetPorn.com are coming from!

Is it that you're getting your own CCs replaced all the time because of fraudulent use by others

OR

is it that you get other folks CCs all the time to carry out fraudulent use/abuse?

Your sentence was a bit ambiguous <grin> .
