Router recommendations, favorites?

I have a MacSense router - 5 years old, works perfectly. So I actually don't know anything about routers, because the thing has worked perfectly.

Now I need to set up networks for two friends - home offices, each with two Macs.

Price is no object . . . only reliability and ease of setup. I don't mind paying $150 instead of $20 if everything works.

I've been extremely happy with the extended WiFi range of my new Buffalo WHR-HP-G54

Don't ask who the bell's for, dude. It's you.

Another vote for Buffalo! When they go on sale with rebate, you can grab them cheap. They also do AppleTalk and are a breeze to setup, even for WDS.

Wireless or wired? I have a Linksys wired router that has worked perfectly since I got it several years ago. I recently added a cheap Netgear gigabit switch to the mix so that I could back up files faster.

Yes, but the new ones (v5) are no good. Peformance problems, in addition to the move away from a Linux OS.

Gotta check serial #s and make sure to get a v4 or lower, or pony up the premium Linksys wants for the WRT54GL model.

There's a new compact model that people are playing with that apparently still runs Linux.

I don't NEED wireless capability. Don't mind if it is there.

I use wired/wireless Linksys and Belkins. Both are painless to set up and require very little maintenance afterwards. About $30-$40 at Walmart.

I've use(d) both Netgear's RP614 and Linksys' WRT54G; both are very good routers. As others have mentioned, if you are going to buy the WRT54G, make sure to get versions 2-4 and not 1 or 5. You can tell by the serial numbers on the bottom of the unit or on the box.

My Linksys wired works great. My D-Link DI-604 only lasted about 2 years.

go with the linksys if you want something hackable.

go with buffalo otherwise. if you go with the buffalo, make sure you get one with WDS - then multiple routers can be used to extend range.

The new Buffalo wireless 125 is on sale at Fry's this week for $45 after rebate (at least at the Atlanta Fry's). I have 4 of the older models that all work great. One of the best things about them is the 24/7 free tech support.
